MARIE’S TAKE OUT

After two high quality albums, as McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman, Gene Clark departed, leaving the two to record a tepid, lackluster album that should've never been released. The former Byrds, Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn. have proven themselves, many limes befote to be leaders in pop music, but the songs and performances here lack drive and inspirations. Let’s hope they get on the track soon, because they, have the talent. The album is on Capitol records. THE LATEST rave in critical circles is poet Jim Carroll’s band’s debut album, “Catholic Boy" (Atco). Carroll is a firey, determined vocalist, who writes hard hitting, street inspired lyrics. His band has a vicious guitar sound, which works well with his high energy ramblings. He's sure to be iflore than a flash in the pan as so many over-hyped musicians become. ONE OF THE finest soul albums ever issued was James Brown’s ‘‘Live At

The Apollo; Vel. 1”, and it's been a crime that it's been out of print for so long. Well, those nice guys with good taste at Solid Smoke (P.O. Box 22372. San Francisco. CA. 94122) have been kind enough to reissue it. Although James Brown is to this day one of the best soul performers alive, this record captures a youthful Brown in a wild, demented performance. From his animalistic screams to his smooth ballads, James Brown was a terror at this stage in his career. This record is reason enough that James Brown is a legend today. THE HEATER'S longawaited follow-uh to their debut is a bit of a letdown. Their cover of “Why Do Fools Fall In Love" is a frantic number that deserves hit status, but the originals on “Energy Transfer” (Columbia) are weak and directionless. This band has the potential of combining-the best of girl vocal groups with the energy of new wave, yet v The Heaters seem to be at a (Page 19 Please)
