WASHINGTON. D C. - When Kevin L. Bieberbach of Town Barft joined the Navy in 1977. he had ho way of knowing he would be involved in such a historic even as the inauguration of the 40th president of the United States Bieberbach, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester G. Bieberbach of 3 Cliffside Dr, participated in the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan as a member of the Navy Ceremonial Guard. • IT WAS A VERY great honor to take part in the inauguration." said the 22-ycar-old New Jersey mjtive "Not everyone gOts the chance-to take part in such a historical event " . Established in 1931, the Ceremonial Guard represents the Navy in public and military ceremonies in Washington Members of the guard hold White House security clearances because of their duties near the president and other heads of state. tion, the unit provides Navy men and women to serve as color guards for various events and personnel to participate in approximately 700 funerals a year at Arlington National Cemetery. Members of the Ceremonial Guard are specially selected and assigned to the unit from the Navy Is Recruit Training Commands and the fleet. Assignment to the Guard is voluntary. THE GUARD represented the Navy and the nation in September 1979, when its members marched in Lord Mountbatten's funeral procession in London. The Ceremonial Guard also honored Gen. Omar Bradley during the halftime cei'emony at the «1979 Sun Bowl football classic in El Paso. Texas. "I myself have taken part in-several full honors ceremonies such as the reception of the Prime Minister of China and Lord • Mountbatten's funeral,'' said Bieberbach. .X Since the Ceremonial Guard represents not only the Navy, but often the nation, eacK member’s appearance is very important. Guardsmen are responsible for maintain-

ing their uniforms and personal appearance flawlessly. "I'm proud to represent the Navy and my country the best I can to the eyes of the world," Bieberbach said. "It takes a lot of pride and determination to make it in the Guard, and I'm glad I'm a part of it."
