Tigers Regain League Title
*, by David Weinberg The Lower Cape May wrestling team saw their 11-match winning streak come to an end ht the hands of non-conference opponent Vineland as the Poultry Clan snatched a 25-19 victory two weeks ago. That loss was quickly forgotten, however, as the Capers used victories over Buena, 31-20, and Hammonton, 33-22, to regain the Cape Atlantic League championship last week. On Wednesday against Buena, owners of the
league title the last two seasons, the Capers seesawed through the first nine bouts. After .Jim Sharlpley dropped an 11-1 decision to Anthony Santoro in the opening match, Bill and John Porter both grabbed shutout wins to give the Capers a 6-4 lead. THAT WAS quickly erased in the 122 pound bout as Buena's Domingo Rivera decisioned injury-riddled Mike Laffey 15-7 for an 8-6 Buena advantage. Victor Romeo and Paul lames won the 129 and 135 pound.

ERMA — Next Monday another group of wrestlers get a chance to show their stuff in an s eight-school ' tournament beginning at the local high at 9 a.m. Wrestlers on th’e freshman, junior varsity, and all varsity wrestlers with less than four matches on their record will compete. Lower Cape May Regional will be hosting Absegami, Hammonton, Middle Township, Oakrest. Ocean City, Saint Joseph’s, and Wildwood Catholic. "The primary motive for this tournament is to give
the kids some'*expo3urc," explains Regional Booster Club member Ed Sherettd. "We have some very fine wrestlers on these levels, but they don't ,get the recognition 4hey deserve due to the success of the Ixiwer Capk? May varsity squad. Hopefully, this will give them exposure." Admission for the tournament, which runs from 9 to sTts 50 cents for students and $1.50 for adult's. Refreshments will be available throughout the tournament.

They upped it to 17-14 as Sean Aretz handed Mike Taylor his second consecutive loss after a 12-0 start with a 5-1 victory. The injury-plagued Chiefs handed the Capers 12 easy points, forfeiting the 170 and 188 pound bouts. Though Angelo Cammerane scored a- controversial 5-4 decision over Charles Jasperse in the Heavyweight match, the effort fell short. WHEN THE Blue Devils and* Capers tangled last Saturday, both squads were unbeaten in league competition. Beginning with Sharpley’s 5-4 win for Lower Cape May in the 101 pound match, the two teams traded victories through the first six weight classes. Hammonton’s Robert Norton took a 6-2 decision from Bill Porter in the 108 pound bout, then Caper 115 pounder Jose Samiengo and Hammonton’s 122 pound Jim Quagliato each captured 11-0 major deci-. sions *o knot the match at 1-7. ROMEO TOOK A 13-1 superior decision to put the Capers up 12-7, but Hammonton climbed back on top 13-12 as Paul Christos was granted a default victory after lames suffered a leg injury in the 135 pound match. A 7-5 upset win by Lower’s Craig and a second period pin by Taylor gave
the Capers the lead for good with four bouts remaining at 21-13, Sean Thomas pulled Hammonton within 21-16 witfl a 7-4 win over Ray Obst in the 158 pound bout, but Caper 170 pounder Greg MacDonald added si* more points to the Caper's total with a default victory after Jerry Marciano suffered a rib injury. FRED FISCHER gave the final six points to Lower Cape May with a third period pin over Jim Falconiero. Brian Beebe gave 11-1 Hammonton their final six points with a second period pin against Jasperse. The two victories raised the Caper record to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in league competition.. Lower Cape May can clinch the league title outright with a victory over Wildwood Catholic on February 18. This week, the Capers face non-conference opponent Bridgeton tonight in Erma, then travel back to Hammonton on Saturday to compete in the Capo Atlantic League Individual Chajnpionships.

CAPE MAY - Tolz Realtors sold out Guarantee Bank 61-53 as the tandem of Bonnor (Bob) and Connors (Kevin) tallied 30 and 19 points, respectively in Junior Basketball. Brian Jones deposited 17 points for Guarantee Bank, Kenny Wright banked in 11 points and Mike Cromin 10 to compliment Jones. Sean Magee and John Richardson pounded in 21 and 18, respectively, for Needles. Nick Castellano was the right claw for Lobster House as he pinched Sol Needles for 26 points.

Needlers Zip Strombolis
CAPE MAY - The Needlers II stumped Stumpos Strombolis 15-11, 15-6, 15-4 behind the serving and bumping of Cookie Hague, Donna Troiano and Michele Bird. Caryl Hudson and Lynn Jeffries served well for the Strombolis in the city Women’s Volleyball tilt. Ocean Academy downed Kona Sports in a close encounter. Amy Truman and Paula Fedoruk were the key point-getters for Ocean. Dee Sciarra and Shirley Ludman excelled
