I'VE BEEN TRYING TO put together a column on fishing this week, and It's almost next to impossible because right now there Just aren't any private and charter boats fishing I'd boen getting reports about mackerel being taken, so I called Joe Rodla of Ronm ? tackle in Rio Grande. He said this was just another idle rumor that gets started this time of the year. He'd heard of some of the commercial draggers taking mackerel way down South, but that as far as he could figure, the fishing season here is at least two to three weeks away. ., .. „ .. Steve Seggern. at South Jersey Fishing and Hunting center confirmed this, and tdlD me that their whole crew was up at the Harrisburg Sportsmen’s Show promoting fishing here on our Cape of Nature. THE NEW FISHING CENTER that Capt. Dick Weber is going to locate where Cape Island West Basin was is proceeding according to schedule. I’ll try to keep you informed of this as it progresses. , 4 . . I got an announcement in the mail this week that the World Championship- Weakfish Tournament held by the Greater Milford Chamber of Commerce will be May 12,14 & 16 with $11,000 cash and other prizes. This has #>Uen to
be quite an affair.
You can get all the entry information on this by writing to Greater Milford Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box.
Milford, Del. 19963. phone (302 ) 422-3301.
THERE WILL BE A*LOT of these tournaments this year. I’ll try to keep you informed as to how to enter them. One thing that will have to be a concern to all anglers this year is the price of fuel. It’s up to $1.33 a gallon as of this writing, and they’re predicting $1.80 a gallon before summer That’s bound to curtail travel, and will probably
promote group fishihg trips.
I'VE AIJM) BECOME CONCERNED with the fresh water shortage It looks as though it's going to be a reality According to tecent finding, the jet stream that con**1 believ^ jve can cure our ills if we take an honest
approach
trols our weather has moved to the north of us, and we just aren’t getting enough pfecipitation to fill our water reserviors. This could damage our fish populations because the fresh water drainage off bur meadows controls the salinity of the water, and this is what makes fish populations grow or decline. There is so much of our fresh water being polluted by outfalls, land fills, and storage of toxic wastes that our valuable reserve supplies will not help us this season. President Reagan is closing down federal research on disposable waste systems.!*try to restore the economy, so its up to the state and rtiunicipal authorities to clean up
their act.
I DON'T FAULT OUR NEW President on this move - a lot of money was wasted at federal levels op research, and we need action, not studies. I like the new slogan - American. I believe we can cure our ills if we take an honest approach John Andrus (our editor) and 1 spent last Saturday afternoon discussing Stone Harbor Point, beach fees, and the many things that effect our environment here on the Jersey Cape I was going to write a columh on this, but he has covered it so well that 1 feel any comment I would make would just be repeating his thoughts. My only hope now is that we take our new President seriously, and work towards getting ourselves out of the economic mess we're in
