Hughes To Chair Panel On Crime

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has been selected by the House Judiciary Committee to chair the Subcommittee on Crime. The Crime Subcommittee has jurisdiction over federal crimes, the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and a whole range of other Federal law enforcement activities. HUGHES. A fourth-term legislator who served as a prosecuting attorney for 10 years, said he was gratified ■ by the appointment and anxious to get to work At his new post. "The Subcommittee on Crime has broad jurisdiction over law enforcement, and the whole range of criminal and violent actions which are of such great concern in our society," Hughes said. "I look forward to working with 4 my colleagues in the Congress and the new Administration in tackling . some of the tough cringe problems that confront our' country," Hughes said.

HUGHES STRESSED his strong belief that basic jurisdiction over crimes and law enforcement must be left to individual state and local governments. At the same time, however, Hughes said that th«r federal government could be of greater help by cracking down on narcotics trafficking and providing more effective assistance to state and local govern-

ments.

"There is no question that the twin cancers of narcotics and crime are closely intertwined in our society,” Hughes said. "This major law enforcement problem, which is not just confined to the inner cities, must be a high priority at all levels

government."

Hughes said he was also deeply concerned about the growing rate of vfolent crime, particularly those directed against the elder-

ly-

Hughes has served on the House Judfciary Committee ever since he was first sworn into Congress in

1975.
