In C.A.L. Individuals Stomp follows Romp on Mats
by David Weinberg Six of Lower Cape May’s wrestlers received an unexpected day of rest in preparing for the Cape Atlantic League Individual Championships as nonconference opponent Bridgeton gave away forfeit victories in the 101, 129, 135, 141, 148, and 170 pound weight classes en route to a 62-6 Caper romp at Erma last Wednesday. The easy match did Lower Cape May little good,
however. Though the Capers were represented in eight of the final twelve bouts, only 158 pounder Ray Obst came away as a victor in the championships last Saturday at Mammon ton. REGIONAL HAD an easy time against the Bulldogs. In addition to the 36 forfeit points, the Capers also captured 18 more via pins. Bill Porter won his 108 pound duel with Reggie Bonner with a pin in the
first minute of their bout. After the Capers went up 44-0, Obst made it 50-0 with a first period pin over Glen Poippel in the 158 pound match. Don Poeppel grabber Bridgeton’s only victory of the match with a first period pin over Lower Cape May freshman Chris Kane in the 188 pound bout, then heavyweight Charles Jas perse gave the Capers their final 6 points with a third period pin over Tom Holloway.
Lady Tige rs The Lower Cape may girl’s basketball team saw their record drop to 7-12 with a 40-28 loss at Wildwood last Tuesday, and a 37-34 upset loss to Buena on Thursday. The Capers fell behind quickly against Wildwood as the Warriors opened up a 14-5 lead after the first quarter. Lower Cape May toughened slightly in the second period, outscoring Wildwood 11-8, but the Warriors still held a 22-16 lead at intermission. THE CAPER’S downfall came in the third stanza, allowing Wildwood 8 points while managing to counter with only 2 as Wildwood opened up a comfortable 30-18 lead. Lower Cape May rallied in the last period, battling the 8-10 Warriors to a 10-10 standoff, but the effort fell short. Lydia Valentine led the Capers in scoring with 6 points, while sister Sandra and the McCullough twins, Beth and Lisa, chipped in 5 points apiece. Sue DelRossi captured
Drop Two
top scoring honors with 11 points, and Marge Crah added 8 points. • • • AGAINST BUENA, Lower Cape may again started off slowly as Buena grabbed an 18-12 first half lead behind the shooting of Lori Carrington. Rose McCarthy and Lisa McCullough did their best to rally the Capers, leading a third quarter comeback that saw Lower Cape May Close to within one point, 26-25, entering the final period. Buena regained their composure in the fourth quarter, however, outscoring the Capers 11-9 en route to their fourth victory of the season. McCarthy finished with 12 points for Lower Cape May, while McCullough tossed in 9 points. Carrington also scored 12 points for the Chiefs. She was backed up by Tina Joyce with 9 points. This week, the Capers were to travel to Mammon ton yesterday, then return homi to take on Sacred Heart tomorrow. David Weinberg

WITH THEIR unbeaten record in league competition, Lower Cape May appeared to be one of the stronger teams for the C.A.L. tournament. Indeed, they started out strongly as Porter, Jose Samiengo, Victor Romeo, Chris Simonsen, Obst, Greg MacDonald, Fred Fischer, and Jasperse all reached the finals in their respective weight classes. Regional's 148 pounder, lost a tough semifinal match to top seeded Sean Thomas of Mammon ton, 75. The finals were a different story, however, as all of the Caper grapplers except Obst were forced to settle for second, place honors. PORTER WAS THE first Caper to fall as top seeded •Dorn Caprice scored an 11-3 decision in the 108 pound bout. Ocean City’s Joe Monteleone grabbed the first of four Raider victories with a first period pin over Samiengo in the 115 pound match. 129 pounder Romeo also gave way to a Raider, dropping a 5-0 decision to Phil Faunce.
