THE WEATHER THIS PAST WEEK has been bordering on spring instead qfjhe end of February wintry cold that we have become used to in other years. In fact, as I traveled around the docks I could detect an atmosphere of things coming alive, and more and more people saying, "Well, it won’t be long now till we can start gettihg the boat ready for fishing." I ran into "BeUy” Weber. Capt. Dick Weber’* wife, in North Cape May, and she told me the whole gang at South Jersey Fishing & Hunting Center are going to man an exhibit in Suffem, N.Y. at the show which they are calling the Super Bowl of fishing exhibitions. There are supposed to be over 200 exhibitors at the show which will last for seven days. DICK SEYMOUR OF COURT HOUSE was telling me that he attended the sports show in Harrisburg, and that it was jammed with sportsmen who were very interested in all the new products that are being made for our sport of angling. South Jersey Fishing & Hunting Center represented our Jersey Cape there too; and they said the show was very successful. Every year at this stage of the game I get a lot of requests from fellows who are just getting started in fishing to provide information on good fishing spots, boat launching areas, and choices' of tackle. Well, I just got in the mail yesterday the 5th annual edition of “Fishing in New Jersey." It contains 35 salt water fishing maps. — 17 fresh water fishing maps, numerous "where and when" articles, and 20 How-to techniques. It’s published by a firm called Fishing in Maryland, Inc. The magazine costs $4.95, and you can get your copy by sending for it at P.O. Box 20l Phoenix, Md 21131. You might also pick this up at your local tackle shop. Its loaded with information, and would really be of use if you're starting out in angling. I PROMISED TO KEEP YOU informed about any new fishing contests that surfaced, and the latent one I’ve heard about is the Delaware Bay Drumfish Derby put on » by the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce. This is the sixth annual contest sponsored by the local Chamber, and this year the co-chairman are Jim Brinson and Bill Thomas. They are planning to hold a six-week contest throughouyjje best weeks for Black Drum. There wuFbe a prize each week, a grand prize at the end, and an awards banquet. Numbered buttons will be issued to contestants, and press releases will be given out each week on the biggest drum taken in that period of time. You’ll be able to enter through your local tackle shop, and any worthy catches will be entered in the Gape May County Fishing Contest al«o. This has been a very popular contest over the years, ahd I’ll try to bring you more information about it as time goes on. I SEE A LOT OF THINGS happening here on the Jersey Cape from many angles. I'm not sure just where a lot of projects art going to wind up in light of President’s Reagan's speech last week, so I think I’ll withold any comment on them until the economy is a little more stable — and until I get more knowledge of them.
