The Solar Switch Proven & Practical By Frank McLaughlin • With today’s high energy costs, many of us are trying to save energy and dollars. Hopefully most of us are insulating* more and driving less — and are looking for more energy saving ideas. Solar energy, the inexhaustible power source, has almost become a household term. It has so much potential, but we all know it is still unproven, uneconomical, and unpractical. Right? SOLAR ENERGY IS PROVEN, practical, and in so many cases, a sound investment for saving money. The most widespread use of solar today is domestic hot water heating; that is, using the sun to heat water for showers, dishwashing, clotheswashing, etc. Because we need hot water in our home twelve months of the year, hot water heating is usually the number two eqprgy user in our homes. A solar hot water heating system reduces the cost of hot water heating by 70 per cent. . MANY SOLAR DOMESTIC4iot water heating systems pay for themselves in just three of four years. Upkeep is no problem because service is simple, and it’s only required about every four years on a well-designed Sy A solar system is a pleasure to own. It looks nice. It is safe. It is as quiet as a burning match. The savings look nice too. They are as hot as a burning match. Solar systems save our country energy, they are good •for our beautiful environment, and they make us more independent both individually and as a group. The largest reason for solar’s tremendous acceptance by so many people, however, is the money which is saved by using sun power. NEXT WEEK — The economics of owning a solar system. ♦ Frank Mfctiaughfln of Avalon (368-5078) is a marketing representative with an area solar energy company.

693 Weeks Landing Rd. wants to erect a threeblade 20 KW wind turbine generator on his property. The complete windmill project would be financed under a $39,000 federal Small Business Demonstration Grant. It is believed to be the largest windmill project in this area to qualify for such funding. i THE TOWNSHIP GOVERNING BODY has' yet to even introduce an ’ amendment to its zoning ordinance to provide for windmills despite a recommendation from the Planning Board, last June. But MacDonald’s proposed 100 ft. windmill would be 25 ft. above the maximum height limitation* in the proposed windmill code. Above 75 ft. a variance would be required. ' Mr. MacDonald would need both a hardship and use variance to get his project off the ground. OTHER VARIANCE requesta scheduled to come before, the board (which meets'beginning at 7:30 p.m. March 3 in township hall) include those from: *- Harry Kanfe to build on four undersized, 40x80 ft. lots on Richmond, Rochester and Memphis Aves in the Wildwood Gables section of Diamond Beach; — James and Margaret Perri of Shadelane Ave., Bayside Village to build a porch 7 ft. within the required 30 ft. rear-yard setback; — James Wagner to build a house one ft. within the 25 ft. frontyard setback requirement at Holmes and Howland Aves, North Cape May; — Prank Morris of Mallow Rd., Cape May Beach (Town Bank) to construct an entrance deck 3 ft. into the frontyArd setback; — Ray and Joan Buck of Fern Rd., Cape May Beach for a screen porch 8 ft. into the frontyard setback; — Eva Gamer of Beach Dr., North Cape May to build an atteched garage encroaching on sideyard setback.
