fishermen must make time in their busy schedules to review their record keep-, ing systems, to note recent changes in tax laws artd to investigate potential- tax reducing programs. Sea Grant, through its Marine Advisory Service (MAS) Programs, assists commercial fishermen in these tasks by' providing information on\federal tax revisions and tax saving programs. The IRS ’publication, "Tax Guide for Commercial Fishermen,” summarizes this tax information ahd can/be obtained by requestihg a copy from the Cooperative Extension Service Office here. Stewart Tweed, the MAS Marine Extension Agent for Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties, explained that the 52-page booklet is prepared annually by the IRS with advice and assistance from the MAS. TWEED SAID THAT this publication is designed to help fishermen become familiar with the federal tax laws as they apply to the fishing business. It discusses changes in the tax laws and important filing dates that affect fishermen. For example', it explains when and how certain kinds of income are taxed and how certain expenses may be deducted. This information Will^allow fishermen to pay ofiily the correct amount of tax. This booklet is for the commercial fishermen who reports his profit or loss on Schedule C (Form 1040) and it does not cover the corporate or partnership form of business operation. THIS GUIDE IS divided into 16 chapters which give information on topics such as Business Expenses, SelfEmployment Tax, Losses
from Operating a Business, Investment Credit and other Tax Saving Considerations. "A very iiriportant part of preparing your return is to keep good records," Tweed said. "Chapter 2 provides a list of valuable record keeping ideas and the final chapter offers a sample record keeping system. Record keeping books for next year’s tax are available from the MAS." New Jersey,’s MAS programs are administered through a cooperative effort of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service and the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium. Programs are designed to bring information on Marine Science Research and Extension Activities to the residents of New Jersey. Additional information - can be obtained by calling the County Cooperative Extension Service.
