On Johnny Cash's now album, “Rockabilly Blues”' (Columbia), he takes a few steps backwards to his rock days for the legendary Sun label. The music on this album is simple and raw with highly emotional vocals. \ With ease he shows he can still rock with the best of them, and it*would be nice if this album would sell well enough that Johnny Cash would do more rockabilly. Even if he •turns to straight country ..tusic, Johnny Cash should be praised for taking some

chances.

THOSE' WHO listen to album-oriented-rock radio, have probably been hearing the latest sensationfrom EnflUnd, Adam and The AnUfTheir American debut altpn, “Kings Of The Wild Frontier" (Epic) is a fine collection of catchy, pojvrock tunes. This band has a lot of power, but they never bury the melodies, which is why it’s easy for a station to program songs such as“Jolly Roger," “Dog Eat Dog,” "Antmusic," or the tiUe track. If their Uve show matches the sounds on this, record, Adam and The Ants could be a very

big group.

ANOTHER NEW group from England that could do something here is Liverpool’s The Teardrop Explodes. Their debut, "Kilimanjaro" (Mercury) is a melodic, yet sometimes eerie pop record. Singer Julian Cope has a hypnotic voice and the synthesizer backing is perfect for setting a mood. Not q^nstantly as grabTaleiu Needed RIO GRANDE - The Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society needs talent for the upcoming 5th annual Telethon Benefit to be aired April 11, over Teleprompter Channel 2. Those interested can call the unit office at 886-1154.

bing as Adam And The Ants, The Teardrop Explodes make music that will probably stand the test

of time a lot better.

WHEN FRANK JtAPPA disbanded the original Mothers Of Invention, fans wondered what happened to colorfdk musicians like Don Preston, Elliot Engber, Jimmy Carl Black, Motorhead Sherwood. and Btm and Bunk

Garddner. Well, Rhino Records has been kind enough to put together a compilation album of theit; post-Zappa careers. "Grandmothers" (Rhino) has everything from avantgarde jazz to blues to fifties inspired rock, the same as the early Mothers Of Inven-

tion albums.

This album is proof that the reason the early Mothers Of Invention were worth hearing wasn’t just because of the talents of Frank Zappa, but because the entire grouji had something to offer. Let’s hope Rhino can issue some more of this in the not too

distant future.
