Well we nuily not Mine winter lhl« week In the form of ■now but think goodnru It didn't atiy iround too long I've been ho|>*fully predicting a mild end of winter, and an early aprina I'm »tlll hoping I'm right Some people are meting that way. and nature i« pointing that way too. Cot "HI" rhomp.on waa telling m* Thuraday that on Saturday the nth Cpt Ed Delln.kl ia going toaall hia firat party offahore in aearch of ling and cod They II .leave, about < a m and will apend the day way offahore in the ocean looking for fiah - thla ia. of courae, aubject to whether there are enough fares interested in going fishing I'm betting that there are enough anglers with cabin fever to make this trip possible , „ jt I HEARD AI.SO THAT "HIcIT Jotnei and some fellows up in Bidwella Creek are getting their nets ready for shad and bunkers I menhaden I in ttw bay The "Anglers News" this week ia full of ads from Cape May party boats apeaking of '81 bookings for weakfish, drum and bluefish - so our fleet is getting ready Nature has already shown signs of an early spring: trees are budding, dogs are starting to ahed, and daffodils are up about 6 inches above ground. The middle of March is here; can
Spring be tar behind?
A FEW WEEKS AGO I wrote about some new equipment that will be mandatory for boats 16 ft. in length or more t I'm talking about power bools). Now, in Coast
Guard language. I quote:
A new regulation became effective on 1 January 1881. The regulation requires all boats when used on coastal waters, which includes the territorial seas, the Great Lakes, the bays and sounds emptying into these waters, as well as the associated waters up to a point where the rivers arc less than two miles wide, and boots owned In the United States when operating on the high seas to be
equipped with visual "distress signals.
"Pyrotechnic Visual Distress Signalling Devices" must be Coast Guard approved, in serviceable condition and stowed to lie readily accessible. If they are marked with a date showing the serviceable life, this date must not have passed JCxisting devices, except handheld red flares, not marked\iih the Coast Guard approval number may be counted toward meeting the requirement until 1 July 1982 as long as they remain in serviceable condition. COAST GUARD APPROVED pyrotechnic devices carry on expiration date. This date can not exceed 42 mon-
HBTocian and bay! T : SOUNDINGS J WWHBasgatgky Boyd TylwrlB^B^J ths from th« daW of manufacture and Asuch time the device can no longer be counted towards the minimum requirements. .. , The purpose of the new regulation is to assure that boaters have a way of attracting attention and securing assistance should the need arise Properly used distress signals will also help to reduce the time it takes to locate a boat in difficulty when a search is underway. This will reduce the possibility of a minor accident becoming a
tragedy.
Model, Atlas In Finals
No single signaling device is ideal under all conditions and for all purposes. Consideration should therefore be given to carrying several types. For example, an aerial flare can be seen over a long distance on a clear night, but for closer work, a hand held flare may be more useful. THE FOLLOWING TABLE lista the currently approved
devices:

CAPE MAY - Defending champion Model Cleaners and darkhorse Atlas Motor Inn survived the semifinals impressively to advance into the title game this Saturday at the Elementary School. Action begins at 1 p m. with the consolation game between Hillhouse Greenery and Florists and Casales. Model Cleaners, again using their seemingly endless bench, weathered the high-pressure storm of Casales by a score of 35-21. BRIAN LUCAS (11 pta ), Dennis Horn (8 pts.) and Lee Pierce (5 pts.) led the pack down the road to victory giving Model the opportunity to defend their
Atlas Motor Inn, Model's potential bdfrrier, uprooted Hillhouse Greenery and Florist 37-28 with a second half explosion. Brendan Connor and Barry Wise orchestrated a sound game plan whereby Connor
would penetrate deep into the Hillhouse middle with the options of going to the hoop or passing off to Wise. IT WORKED beautifully as Wise tallied 12 points and Connor 10. Drew Reese played excellently for the Atlas team also, scoring 6 points, rebounding some crucial l^ls and playing great dM^nse. Wayne Walker lef the Greenery with 26 markers.
