Avalon Edges Out 4th Win

§By Boyd Tylor

The March winds are blowing.

I purposely waited till the last minute this week to find out how the proposed fishing parties might have made out, but I'm afraid the heavy winds spoiled any fishing plans

for this last weekend.

I do know that shad have been taken in nets in the Bay, because I was in the new Fish Hook fish market (successor to Steve’s Seafood) in the Villas, and "Buizy

Chew was cleaning some nice looking 7 and 8 pound ones that his brother caught. He was also talking of boning

shad, and plans to have boned shad for sale., DOWN AT THE LOBSTER HOUSE Friday night they

had boned shad and shad roe on the menu, and I’d heard about this, too, because Randy Laudeman told me he’d

gotten some shad in his nets in the Bay. They had a special on cod fish cakes in the Lobster House Diner, but I

couldn’t find out just where the cod came from-they could have been taken way offshore, or they could have come up

North of us.

HARRY 8TOTZ of Cape May, was in there, and they were just finishing packing out some porgies that had been taken on Capt. Dick Stotz “Sea Wife” from down South (I don't believe how far South). BEFORE I GET TOO FAR away from the local news though, “I’d like to report that Capt. David Roneman is taking the "Neptune" (a commercial trawler) to Kodiak, Alaska for a year of fishing. Dave called his mother, Joan Roseman, Friday night to say that he’d caught two white Marlin, and five tuna so far on this trip. They’ll cover 7,500 miles on this trek, and he’s got young Phil Tomlin with him, and later on Bill Bright will be joining them. They’re going to join the vessel “Pursuit" which has been fishing up there. Some of the smarter commercial fiahermen are making this move, because those waters have proven more productive. THERE WAS QUITE a bit of anxiety about the Japanese interests trying to buy squid in our market, and I still don’t understand why they want to buy our catches when they have boats of their own. It did come back from the meetings, however, that they want a very big quality type of squid, and that if they get it - which' I doubt, - it won't affect our bait market here. I wonder if the Japanese are having problems with their quotas, and want to use'of ours? I SPENT A LITTLE TIME down at the South Jersey fishing Center this week. I’m talking about their new location. It looks as though Capt. Dick Weber is really making some progress. Most of the basin is now dredged, and the name of the center now appears on the roof. They were finishing off the tackle shop front windows, and the store is pretty well stocked. It’s going to be a very fine operation, and there’s a lot of work yet to do, but you can see it falling into place. CAPT. GUY D’ANTONIO's new head boat is docked on the south side of the basin. He sold the "El Toro,’ and his new boat is a beauty. I’VE HEARD SOME REPORTS on big 10 to 12 pound tide runners being taken in Oregon inlet, so that’s a good sign for our weakfish season What happens on the Outer Banks in the first part of the year usually winds up happening here during our time of the year. One other item, I had to head up the Parkway this week, and I noticed four or five boats fishing in Great Bay. I wouldn't be surprised if they’re not after white perch, but I haven’t heard of any big catches yet. I WAS GOING TO MENTION what President Reagan s budgets cuts are going to do to the Coast Guard, but the message isn’t completely clear yet. There’s talk of a cut in search and rescue. I’ll have to forego that story until I get more information. Permit Sought For Bulkhead

AVALON — Permission to construct a bulkhead and fill in an area in Princeton Harbor at 642 22nd St., here has been sought from Army Engineers by Howard Evans, John Ferguson and

Edwin Russek. The bulkhead will be along the same line as a previously existing barrier, and is intended to retain fill and regain property lost to erosion.
