Board Doesn’t Buy Disciplinary Aide
ERMA Although he Mid it would help alleviate disciplinary problems, the Lower Cape May Regional School Board voted 6-3 against board member Freeman Douglass' proposal to hire an additional aide to monitor high school hallways Mr Douglass argued last Tuesday night that the new position is needed since one of the staff members who has been serving as a hall monitor was recently reassigned to supervise the school parking areas This move was made as an administrative effort to beefup enforcement of attendance and school parking regulations THE RESPONSIBILITY of the; aide would not only be to monitor Halls, Douglass said, but also to handle cut-slips and per form'Kcncral office duties •‘It will help with discipline problems,” he added High school principal Alan Beattie supported the idea of hiring another aide, at least until the end of this school year. He explained that because there is now someone outside monitor mg the parking area four periods pet;., day, there is l«w time available to handle the numerous reports of students cutting class •THESE SITUATIONS need to’ be handled right away.'' Beattie said. • Hopefully within 24 hours we can check and find out why a student cut class.” But a majority of the Board weren't convinced creating a new aide position is the way to go about solving problems with discipline. Only Robert Matthews and HafTison Bitting went along with Mr. ^Douglass BOARD MEMBER Paul Lundholm agreed. He emphasized that the taxpayers shouldn’t have to bear the expense of trying to keep those students in school who have no desire, whatsoever, to be there "I

don't see spending money | to chase kids down the | railroad track," he said". He added that the administration should attempt to pursue some form of alternative action. Asked if he thought additional aide was necessary at this time, superinten- f dent Ephraim Keller i replied last in his opinion the problem is already on the way to being solved. HE CITED THE Board s decision that evening to appoint'Carol Johnson as a secretary to the- acting I assistant principal saying it may he the solution | everyone is looking for. This appointment will allow some of the general office help that has been aiding the assistant principal to resume their normal responsibilities. The clerical position Mrs. Johnson is filling was created by the board last month She will receive a $6,900 prorated salary. IN RELATED business, Gail Schmidtchen was ap- j pointed as a guidance counselor at the high school until the end of the school year. She replaces Marjorie Low who is presently on a maternity leave. According to Mr. Keller, Mrs. Schmidtchen has already had the opportunity to become acquainted with a number of the students she will be counseling thru her previous position as counselor at Vo-Tech.
