Fox Eyes A Fifth Term
COURT HOUSE - Sheriff Beech N. Fox has announced that he will run for reelection this year, campaigning on his record and in futhcrance of his belief that "the officers and not the prisioner should run the prison". “We stdrted many years ago with a poorly administered and politically oriented system." Fox said. "After permanently ridding ourselves of the politically favored and other unqualified employees, we began to build a system based on qualifications and incentive. The majority of our key staff people in supervision are still with the system and provide the core of an overall excellent staff.” FOX DECRIED the "complexities, restrictions and requirements that have developed through the years in county jaita as civil rights groups ami tin courts have become marc involved in forcing chanfas within prison systems. "Some changes were of course needed," Fox said, "but in general, just as crime in the streets has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 15 to 20 years, so have problems in prisons, where prisoners use new found flexibilities and 'rights’ which have in my opinion encouraged defiance and disruption. While many factors can be cited, I feel the increased problems in prisons are due In large part to the same climate of permissiveness and condescendence within the criminkl justice system that fostered the street crime problem." Fox, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully against Rep. William Hughes for Congress in last November’s election, will be seeking his fifth threeyear term as sheriff. He is 46, and had spent almost 10 years as a state trooper before becoming sheriff in 1969. He was alto a member of the Lower .Township Police Department, where he started in 1to5. He is currently president of the statewide New Jersey Sheriffs' Assn. Real Estate Office Opens AVALON Mrs Laura E Ferguson..and‘*Allan H.
