Ptg«« Chinnici, GOP Vow To ' i Restore School Aid
IvOWER TWP - If the •Ute legislature approves the; educational aid cuts recommended by Gov Brendan Byrne for the next fiscal year, schools here witt lose almost one half million dollars in state revenue support funds. That's the word from Lower Township elemen lary schools superinten dent Ed Campbell, who told the l.antvm on Friday that the loss of $478,557 will have a tremendous impact „n Ixith the school tax rate and the overall quality of education? ACCORDING to a New Kersey Education Assn, 'research report, the Lower Cape May Regional School District (administering the high and junior highschools i is expected to lose some 1422.6a? This in • dudes $356,319 in minimum aid. $8,876 compensatory education aid. $6,936 school lunch aid. $10,923 in public , school safety aid (guards), and $40,583 in transportation a id Overall, thft would result in an estimated t average increase of about 10 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in the district s three constituent municipalities. Cape May City. Lower Twp. and West Cape May. The Lower Township Elementary School District will be axed $8,750 in compensatory education aid, $3,444 in school lunch' aid, and $41,726 in transportation aid This results in a total loss of $55,920 The approximate increase to the taxpayer is estimated dt 2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. niK TWO districts are likely' to lose another $25,000 each if the federal government decides not to distribute federal impact
aid. Referring to the two Lower Township districts, Mr Campbell stated that the "irony in all this is that we are designated as wealthy How can we be considered wealthy when the average citiren’s income is $4,000 below the state average and the county’s December unemployment figure was 22 per cent?" •THIS IS A political issue,” he continued. "This is just another step in the continuous cycle of cutting funds to education" He pointed out that in this year’s state bud^Jbt alone, there is at the minimum an excess surplus of some $200 million School officials in the township are strongly encouraging residents to write their legislative representatives and speak out against these massive cuts. "Every organization and individual in the county should speak out," Mr. Campbell said. "This money is going somewhere and by law it should be coming here. If enough speak out something will be done.” He noted that in Haddonficld, for example, •citizens joined together and sent more than 500 letters to their state legislators. •FOR THE LAST five years children have been being used as political pawns.” the superintendent continued. "The only way this is ever going to stop is when people finally stand up and say they’ve had enough." Citing the cliche about "Who speaks for the children", Mr. Campbell added, "If we in education don’t speak for. the children, who will?"
