Superintendent of Schools Urges Concerted Effort Against Cuts

TRENTON - Assemblyman Joseph W, Chinnici (R., 1st Dist.) today said that he and the eight Republican members of the Joint Committee on Appropriations have pledged to make the restoration of the $64 million worth of aid to education. Which Governor Byrne hafKcut from the State’s budget, their number one priority. "The Joint Appropriations Committee has the power to adjust the governor's proposed budget and we’re going to see that education aid is returned to the 234 school districts that the governor has labeled ’wealthy’,” Chinnici said. "IN THIS DAY and age there is no such thing as a 'wealthy' school district. Between state mandated programs and inflation all school districts need this valuable state aid," he said. Chinriici said that "4he $5.6 billion budget that the

governor has proposed is the largest in the state’s history, and certainly the end-of-the-year surplus will be large enough to fund this aid to education. "THE RECORD speaks for itself. The governor always over-estimates expenses and underestimates revenues. Last year, at this time, he projected a surplus of $21 million. Today we find that the surplus is more than $220 million." .One of the senior Republican members of the Joint Committee on Appropriations, Chinnici said. . "There is no justification for the governor’s denying our children a decent education.- There is no reason that our children should be denied an education when we will have more than enough of a budget surplus to fund a proper education for them."
