The nicest aspect of the recent upswing in the popularity of country music has been the availability of pure rockabilly music. For those who are unfamiliar with the term “rockabilly.” this was the style of music that Elvlfc, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Gene Vincent started out with. A litUe bit of country, mixed with some rhythm yid blues and a strong leaping of pure rock and roll. The sound was wild and rocking, and, although it faded from top-forty, people such as Ray Campi and Colin Winski conUnued to record it. Now there’s a hardcore rockabilly following that supports hundreds of bands. JOE ELY has been steadily building a large following as a country artist, but each of his albums has had its share of rockabilly. His new record. "Musta Notta Gotta Lotta" (MCA) is 100 per cent prime rockabilly. The •material rocks hard, with . strong backing from his musicians, and Ely’s determined, passionate vocals

Joe Ely has a record that could easily win over the hearts and dollars of record buyers. l.-'C XTC’S quirkyADop music has finally, anpr three albums, caught]j|pn with their fourth and strongest effort 'Black Sea’’ (Virgin). It’s hard to describe the music of XTC, as their lyrics and music are often quite off-the-wall. But yet, these are a true pop tunesmiths and, t erefore, every XTC song is a stong melody line. In many ways, they could be compared to the Small Faces of the late sixties. A lot of potential singles with this album, but the best bets would have to be "Generals and Majors" or “Sgt. Rock." XTC is sure to be one of the most important bands of this decade. THANKS TO THE powerfully emotional vocals from Pauline Black, The Selector’s debut album was one of the better ef- ’ forts presented by the current breed of ska . groups. Unfortunate^ like Madness and Specials, the Selector’s second effort “Celebrate The Bullet” | (Chrysalis) pales in comparison. This time the group has more of an R&B tone to their ska sound. Normally, this would be a plus, ,but The Selector haven’t the punch and drive as before. Hopefully, this js just a minor setback and the group will' bounce back strong with their third album.
