by Bob Sillies AVALON — Beginning this week, the local branch of the County Library will be open on weekends too. Located in the old elementary school on 26th St., the library will be open on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a childl%n's story hour on Fridays at 2 p.m. THE NEW HOURS are possible because the county recently hired Patricia Fagan as a weekend librarian. A local resident, Mrs. Fagan has considerable library experience, having worked as a volunteer in a school library for several years. Councilwoman Rachel Sloan told the Herald Saturday she had been trying to get the library open on weekends since last Oct. She explained the delay was primarily due to the county not being able to find a weekend libarian until recently. ‘TVE BEEN pushing this project primarily so school children will have a
library to use on weekends," Mrs. Sloan said. "The school library is closed on weekends so they have no place to go unless they travel to Cape May Court House." Mrs. Sloan also noted that the library will be useful to many people who venture to Avalon on weekends. "For many people the library will be more convenient than their one at home," she said. CURRENTLY THE library building is undergoing renovation to make it more attractive and energy efficient. According to Mrs. Sloan, the building used to house elementary students in grades K-8. In 1965, with the opening of the new elementary school, the old school on 26th St. became the Avalon Community library. It served that function for 10 years. In 1975 the county took over the facility and established the present branch library. The facility is open weekdays 9:45 a.m. to 1 and 2 to 5 p.m.
