New Well To Cost $320,000 Beach Fees & parking Meters Pay

STONE HARBOR - At the March 24 Borough Council meeting, two bids for construction of a new well and pumping equipment at 95th St. and 2nd Avenue were opened and read by CTerk Marjorie

Wohr.

Layne-New York Inc. of Moorestown, N.J., had earlier recommended replacement of the well at 96th st., following an unsuccessful attempt to video inspect the old well. The 56-year-old well is one of three which were supplying the municipality. LayneNew York’s bid was for $319,965. The other bid was submitted by A.C. Schultes & Sons Inc. of Woodbury for $333,575. FOLLOWING THE reading of bids council President Arden W. Hand

said, “Harry, this is your baby, what do you think?’’

Councilman Harry E.

Strohmetz replied by asking permission to delay awarding the bid for two days to give the matter further consideration. On March 26, Layne-New York was awarded the contract. Construction - will begin soon, since York-Layne must complete construction in less than three months after starting, and Council wants to furnish a water supply adequate for

summer population. IN OTHER matters,

councilman Harry Strohmetz offered a resolution concerning State Senate Bills 1610-1614, introduced by Senator Dodd. Council felt that 1611 thru 1614 would place every facet of water control, from acquisition to sale, in the

hands of the DEP, and since they believe that municipalitfes have satisfactorily handled water supply and distribution systems without the necessity of state intervention — these bills were seen creating additional

bureaucracy

Stone Harbor governing body believes DEP already has sufficient matters to attend to and insufficient S ialified personnel to hane day-to-day problems of small municipalties. Council, to a man, feels the state should be attempting fett government rather than more, and the council adamantly and of- • ficially went on record as opposing the bills, and appraising Gov. Brendan Byrne, Sen. James S. Cafiero and assembleymen Joseph Chinnici and James Hurley of the fact.

Plaudits At Budget Hearing

by M’Ellen Rowland AVALON - The latest regular meeting of Borough Council approving the 1981 budget, closely resembled a mutualadmiration society between present incumbents and local residents. First action was the presentation of handsomely engraved certificates of appreciation to Richard B. Light, 2948 First Ave. and John Knight. 5765 Ocean Dr. MR. LIGHT spent "43 wonderfully happy years’’ with the Insurance Com-

pany of North America and was vice president in charge of agencies. He was honored in recognition of his aid to council Pres. Philip Judyski and councilman Raymond L. Gray Jr. in saving taxpayers $40,000 in insurance premiums during the past two years. Mr Knight’s certificate was presented in "longoverdue’’ gratitude for designing the official logo of Avalon. A sales representative for the Electrolux Company for 47 years, he conceived the

idea and designed the longfamiliar emblem which he envisioned as representing “Avalon irt—^f natural form. The blue represents the ocean, green the mar shes and white the sand.” The duck flys for the local fowl, the ships helm for boating, the sun’s rays for surf bathing and the fish, of course, represents the sport anglers love most. Both recipients were obviously moved by the recognition of their efforts. THE AUDIENCE was genuinely delighted to learn there would be no tax increase despite enormous inflationary pressures and increased services — and James Henry, 4327 5th Ave., appeared to speak for everyone present when he congratulated Council members for their achievements over the past two years without requesting a tax increase.

"WE DON'T have an up-to-date listing of this information now, and would like to compile a completed list soon," the mayor said. "In this way, knowledge of events and meetings will be readily available to the community upon request. CAPE MAY — Persons using the beaches and streets of this resort last summer pumped almost $290,000 into the city coffers. Beach fees, which prt^ vided two-thirds of the total, brought in $189,516, whiKP parking meter receipts accounted for $99,847. With the resort’s Victorian heritage attracting more and more visitors, 1961 will probably be the year that parking meter revenue tops the $100,000 mark with beach tag receipts possibly reaching $200,000. THE TWO nontax sources . of revenue together amounted to more than 8t*i per cent of last

year’s total city budget of $3.3 million, (fines and court costs brought in another $66,644.) "Easy come, easy go". This year the city has

$125,000 earmarked in the 1961 budget for replacement and new parking emters. The new machines are supposed to be "vandal resistant."
