Boro To Estimate

Water Use AVALON — Borough Council on Thursday night is scheduled to consider authorizing estimated water meter readings for local users during half the year. Under an amendment to the local ordinance, water rates would actually be read only twice during the four quarters of the year; estimated readings being rendered the rest of the time. No advance information was forthcoming as to which quarters will be estimated. IN OTHER matters 'Ot tomorrow night's 8 o'clock Council session, the governing body is scheduled to: •set the dates and pro^ cedures for bulk trash pickups. It is the hope that this borough and Stone Harbor can coordinate collection dates; *• •authorize the auction of surplus property including

old autos, boats, and other equipment] The borough is contemplating an auctioneer for the task; •pass a change order on one of the contracts for reconstruction of the water and sewer mains to enable the contractor to begin the phase of the work encompassing 28th to 19th Dune Dr. According to consultant, Alvin Herman, that section should be completed and repaving of Dune Dr. to 8th by Memorial Day weekdnd. The side streets will be undertaken in the fall; •consider an ordinance clarifying and regulating borough purchasing procedures; •announce a Greater Avalon Fishing Tournament to run May I thru Oct. 31, with a tournament director to be named by Mayor Elsworth Armacost.

Unity Plea By Salmon

OCEAN CITY - Preservation and improvement of the tourist industry, protection and encouragement of the fishing industry, and diversification of the area's economic base were stressed by Edward H. Salmon, seeking the Democratic nomination for state Senate, in a speech at the Music Pier here. Salmon, who has served as mayor for Millville and Cumberland,. County freeholder, urged a strong, unified, bi-partisan block of South Jersey legislators. He also called for the

return of government to local control, a statewide workfare program, and a total commitment to control crime and make homes and streets secure.
