was necessary for him to fiiyl his way over debris, around a precariously hanging lifeboat, over the superstructure and past the intense heat of the fire in the lounge area as he made his way to the fridge. "ON TllE BRIDGE he assessed the extent of the fire and damage with the Captain and Chief Engineer. Upon determining that the available firefighting equipment on board Prinsendam had been exhausted, Matz returned to the stem and assisted in off loading the equipment from the helicopter. "He then fabricated a block and tackle platform .to lower the fir^ pump over the side of the vessel to allow for adequate sea water suction. He also cut lengths, of hose and fabricated fittings in order that the fire pump could be adapted to r the nonstandard fittings on the foreign built vessel’s fire

main. _ ADDITIONALLyT Matz directed many of the vessel’s crew members and passengers in further efforts to combat the intense blaze. Throughout this period he maintained calm and discipline artfongst the remaining crew and passengers, in one instance, prevented one of the panic stricken passengers from* committing suicide. "After seven hours on board Prinsedum, Matz was again hoisted into the helicopter, where he continued to tend to the survivors that were hoisted to

safety.

“Before departing for Yakutat, Matz had assisted in rescuing 56 persons from lifeboats. Matz’s complete dedication, sound judgment and zealous devotion to duty are mos^beartily commended and^re in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.”
