By Charles P. Lamey ;

THE STORY OF BADFINGER is one of many ups and downs. Numerous hits, friends of The Beatles, and praised by critics only to be, eventually ignored when producing their finest album, “Wish You Were Here." Lawsuits and record company problems led to their mhin songwriter Pete Ham taking his own life. The group split to try individual projects, none of which caused more than a ripple in the musk industry. Last year, Tom Evans and Joey Molland decided to regroup as Badfinger and try for a comback. Their first album together was rather shoddy, as the group seemed to be grabbing at anything that might produce a hit. One expects prime, smooth, harmony-filled British rock from Badfinger, not disco. "Say No More" (Radio/Atlantic), their follow-up is still filled with weak cuts and misdirection, but it’s a step in the right direction. A couple of the tracts, most notably "Hold On,” prove Molland and Evans are still pop masters, who could still come up with some hits. Let’s hope Badfinger can crack the cTOHs again.

THE GREG KIHN BAND have been releasing fine albums for several years now, only to have them ignored by radio and record buyers. "Rockihnroll Band" (Beserkley) is going to be a tough one to pass by, if AM radio contiues to play Kihn's excellent version of Tommy Roe’s "Sheila." Kihn’s own songs are bright and cheerful, with strong melodies and solid arrangements. He often looks back to the sixties for inspiration, but Greg Kihn is still a modern day pop master. This should be the record to break him out of cult status.

ROCK DISCOS HAVE BEEN hyping Spandau Ballet’s debut album "Journeys To Glory" (Chrysalis), and with its steady danceable rhythms it’s easy to understand why. But to listen to this borihg music at home is a waste of

time. • • •

ALTHOUGH RATHER EXPENSIVE, there’s a seven album box set by The Beach Boys that's currently available as an import. Covering their most productive years with Capitol Records, all the hits and misses, plus some previously unreleased gems, can be found. The high point is one album devoted to Brian Wilton productions outside The Beach Boys, which until now have only been on singles, and then, impossible to locate. The Beach Boys are easily one of the best products of American pop music, and this classy box set proves why.
