WASHINGTON, D C. - The House Subcommittee on Crime will accelerate its hearing schedule on the' causes and prevention of violent crime in America, according to its chairman. Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ). Hughes said that the hearings, which had originally been set for later this year, aje in response not only to the shooting of President Reagan, but also the overall growing trend towards violent crime. •OVER THE PAST weeks and months, we have witnessed a mounting

epidemic of gratuitous violence throughout our nation.” Hughes said '‘tincalled for beatings, plabbings and shootings bet&een total strangers are clearly on the upswing, to the point where it has become intolerable". "The recent attacks on prominent men, such as Dr. Michael Halberstam, John Lennon, Allard Loweostein, and now on Presilent Reagan, are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the violence that is occurring in this country,” Hughes declared. of our cities and towns across the nation, exposure to violencf and street crime is more ordinary than extraordinary. In fact, to many, it seems that the law-abiding citizen has taken to living behind bars while the criminal is free to roam the streets," Hughes said. Hughes said that, in the coming months, the subcommittee will look into various aspects of crime including drug trafficking, youth crime, handguns, bail reform, and others. THE SOUTH JERSEY lawmaker stressed that the hearings would not presuppose any specific solution to the crime problem. "We cannot legislate away crime with a stroke of the pen, any more than we can legislate away diease,” Hughes said. "But we can begin to develop the facts and overall record that will lay the basis for a hardhitting plan of attack, as part of a renewed national commitment to make our streets saft again.” Hughes noted that, with the expiration of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration in fiscal 1982, the nation will no longer have a comprehensive federal progam to help state and local governments combat crime. The hearings, which will take place in Washington as well as other places around the country, will serve as a basis for developing such a program, Hughes said.

SEA ISLE CITY-It will be spring house-cleaning in the city the week of May 4-8, according to Commissioner William Kehner, head of the Department of Public Works. "We all like to clean up our properties, clean out our garages and generaUy get ready for the season,” Kehner said. "Because of this, I have set aside the week of May 4-8 as clean-up time ifl the city. This is the time to dispose of those big items not normally picked up by the trash collectors

— refrigerators, washers, old furniture, and the like. Our Public Works employees will pick up thse items during this special clean-up week. "If you are disposing of a refrigerator, make sure the door is taken off, in order that no children might be hurt," he cautioned. Kehner noted that * residents with items that might be missed should contact him at City Hall, 263-4461, and he will see a truck is dispatched to make the pick-up.
