Gems they were, on the Basketball Court
AVALON - Over 225 people attended the Basketball Banquet last week celebrating the boys and girls’ finest seasons. Gem girls finished their season with a .17*3 record and won the conference championship. Avalon, involved in two post season tournaments, placed first in Port Norris Tournament and second in Avalon’s. Jennifer Snyder won the MVP trophy for the season, averaging 19.9 points per game and 10 rebounds. She also led the team in assists. She also played on the boys’ varsity, making her unique among her peers. Donna Schulz captured the Most Improved Player award by averaging 8.8 points per game, 8.5 rebounds; and was second in assists. Recipient of the Sportsmanship Award was Megan Westhead. posted their finest season ever, dominating all foes in Cape May, Cumberland, and Atlantic Counties, and finishing with a 31-9 record. In post season play, Avalon played in four tournaments placing in all four. Avalon were champs of the two conferences they played in, achieving an undefeated record in 'the Millville conference. During the post season tournament play, Pete Soens, who -was injured most of the season due to a broken finger, had the honor of malting every tournament all-tourhament team while averaging well over 20 points per game. Pete is a three-year varsity performer who led the Gems in total scoring and rates high in field goal percentage. R.J. Soens won the Most Valuable Player trophy by averaging 18 points per game, 10 rebounds; and he led the team in blocked shots. Most Improved Player was awarded to
5-Mile Run Set
WILDWOOD - The Recreation Department’s highly successful 5-mile run returns to the island a( 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23. The course, which is run on the resort’s beach and boardwalk, is a flat, scenic, one loop course. The race is open to teams as well as individuals. Two of last year’s competing teams, the National Guard and The Cape May Coast Guard Training Center, are expected to return to challenge each other again. A PRIZE WILL BE awarded to the best teams and first, second, and third place trophies will be awarded for both men and women In various categories. Other awards will be given to the youngest and the oldest finishers, families with most participants, first Wildwood resident to finish, and a special prize will be given to the person with the raunchiest sneakers. Those who register before May 19 pay only $4.50 and are guaranteed a free T-shirt; late registrants pay $5.50 and will receive a T-shirt as long as supplies last. Registration will also be held the day of the run from 8 a m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Recreation Center. Checks should be made payable to the City of Wildwood and mailed to the Wildwood Recreation Dept.

Coach Orlando finished his season with the boys winning 9 and lost 9 and the girls posting a 6 and 4 mark.

COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Riding Club will hold the first game show in a spring series of four shows Saturday, April 25, at the club on Dias Creek Rd., with registration at 5:45 p.m. There will be seven events in the lighted arena, with ribbons to be awarded to the first four places in each event.
Divisions are small pony, large pony, senior and super senior. Championship awards will be made at the end of the spring series. A fun time for horseless riders with games is slated free of charge before the show, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A day trail ride is slated at the dub for Sunday, April 26.
