KVKRYTHINfi CHANGES IN Hatteras but the w nd. and every trip is different When we arrived at the Atlantic View Hotel the hot water wasn't working, so Hal and Ha> Cray put Bill Andy, and I up in the new motel. So for the first time A-e had wall to wall carpeting, and color TV in our room in fact Andy Grace said it was.the first time hr d ever had a room maid with a beard (Ray Gray cleans the rooms in the off season). I went to church on Sunday, because I felt I had to — the space shuttle was just getting ready to blast off. and 53 , seconds before Go. all the power failed on Hatteras island. A lot of people in Hatteras had remarks on that, but the . two in my room got so hot I felt I ought to go say a little prayer for them „ . , XFTF.R CHURCH I HAD LUNCH at Cpt. hrmal Foster's, and then we took a ride down to the False Point as the weather started changing On Monday we fished the middle beach by the Fireplug, where some drum h?d been taken two days before, but after about two hours we decided to. try Cape Point. The wind picked up there, so we decided to have a closer look at Cape Hatteras Light, and there we found the nation’s tallest lighthouse in danger of toppling into the sea. The erosion is so bad tha» I believe they’ll have to do something by next year, or there won’t be a lighthouse there anymore TUESDAY CAME OUT pretty nice, but (he sea was still rough, so we decided to take a ride to Manteo and over to Wanchese I saw Bill Diller's boat from a distance, but there were so many trawlers there we couldn't get dose enough for a good look We got back in the afternoon, and the ocean looked pretty calm, so we headed for a spot on the middle beach that everybody had been talking about, and we got into some very soft beach; in fact I got stuck, •and Andy Grace went and got Wheeler Ballance who. before be pulled us out, said. ‘ What else could happen this week 7 My son Bill is in Florida. I've got to tend the sta tion. and as long as you've been driving this beach, you have to dig your vehicle In clear to the chassis.” BILL HALBRUNER AGREED with Wheeler, and went

back to the motel, while Andy Grace and I took the ferry over to Ocracoke to try tK» South Point, but the current was too strong so we headed back for the ferry. We passed 9 group of fishermen on the North Point, and found out the next day that they had gotten a drum there, so we’d fhade another bad move. Bad moves were our specialty this trip, but I guess you can’t make many good moves when the winds are hitting 25 to 30 knots. Wednesday the^ind was back in the northeast at the same speed, so I called Cpt. Thurston Gaskill, and he said it should be good Thursday, so we got ready. Cpt. Oliver O'Neal was going with us. but he found out at the last minute he had to go to Wanchese with Cpt. Ernal Foster to get the Albatross III. ONE THING OTHER THAN the wind never changes in Hatteras. and that’s your friends — they were all trying to help us. but the conditions just weren’t right. Cpt. Eph O’Neal showed us his empty fish house, and saidj^Td like to tell you boys something, but nobody’s had ^Jy luck this Bill Halbmner and I went over in the 7 o'cloc||ferry. and met Cpt. Thurston at the dock by his famous South Wind. Whurston took us out in the back sounds on what he called ‘Drum Reef,” and we fished there from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m., but the drum wouldn’t cooperate — even though we smelled them strong twice. While we were out there Joe MacGregor called us on the CB. and we found out what the rest of our gang, had been doing. JOE and WILBUR OSTRANDER JR. of North Wildwood, had spent the whqk* week fishing the beach at Ocracoke with no success, bur Walt llondee of Stone Harbor, and George Keating of Avalon, had beer>oyer in Portsmouth, opposite Ocracoke, keeping the tradition of the Cape May Co,-Hatteras Anglers alive. Walt had gotten himself a 28 pounder, and a 31 (iound red drum from the surf, while George got channel bass that went 21. 26, and 41 lbs. \ Cpt. Thurston had a word for it as we left the dock. He said, "You boys know drum fishing, just when you think you’ve got it down pat, you find out you don’t know anything. You sure tried hard, but I’m sorry we didn’t catch any, but I hope you’ll be back some time soon to try again.” We all agreed as we ate our farewell breakfast at the Atlantic Vttfw, that even though we hadn’t caught a fish (Andy Grace was high with three small sharks) we wouldn’t have missed our week in Hatteras for any amount of money; and we told Wheeler Ballance as we settled our bill, “Lord willing, we’ll be back^the fall.” Pansies Run Wild

’TRENTON - There hasn’lbeen an official wild turkey hunting season in New Jersey for 40 years—and, if there had been, it would not have done anyone much good; the last sighting of such a bird in the state was in 1880. But, thanks to the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, that’s changed; there are now enough wild turkeys to support a hunting season. Hie return of the season
is greeted by “WildTurkey, Wild Turkey,’’ part of a new TV series by New Jersey Public Television called New Jersey Outdoors. It will be shown at 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, on UHF channels 23, 50 r - 52 and 58. Bob Ericksdn, senior wildlife biologist of the * Clinton Wildlife Management Area, joins series host Paul D.
