How To Get
Coverage on Your Home
By Vincent Travis If, after shopping around, you are unable to find a company that will sell you a homeowners policy or if your policy excludes coverage which you may need such as protection against crime losses, there is a place to turn. Limited Protection is available through insurance programs administered or subsidized by the federal or state government. The fire insurance pool (FAIR Plan) is a special program in New Jersey to insure risks that other companies won't take. Any property owner or renter who is unable to obtain coverage against perils of fire and lightning, extended, coverage, and vandalism and malicious mischief, can buy such insurance through this plan. The policy may be extended to cover loss
caused by windstorm, hail, explosion, riot, aircraft, vehicles, smoke and vandalism and malicious mischief. Liability protection is not available under the plan. UPON FILING AN application, any licensed broker can immediately bind temporary coverage for your property. The building must, however," by inspected (free of charge) and meet certain minimum requirements. If the building does not meet these requirements, the binder is canceled and you are notified of the reason for denial. The notice points out the conditions which make the property uninsurable and the measures, if any, which would make it insurable. If the property later meets these requirements, you can resubmit your application for coverage.
More information on the FAIR Plan is available from the New Jersey Insurance Underwriting Association, 744 Broad St.. Newark, or from your local property insurance agent or broker. ANY HOMEOWNER or tenant in New Jersey unable to obtain crime insurance may purchase such insurance against burglary, larceny and robbery in amounts up to $5,000 per incident. This program, one ;of tlie very few state programs available in the country, is adminstered by the New Jersey Insurance Underwriting Association. For your home or apartment tb be eligible for such coverage,' it must meet minimum protection requirements, which include certain locking devices (dead bolt, self-locking.dead latch, etc.) td prevent easy access.
For more information, contact the New Jersey Insurance Underwriting Association or any licensed property insurance agent or broker Residential crime insurance is also available to homeowners and tenants in New Jersey unler the federal plan This program is administered and subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Coverage and eligibility requirements are similar to the state plan. You should compare the two plans to see which best fits your needs For more information about this federal plan, call the Safety Management Institute, Washington. D C. toll free: B00638*8780.
