AT THE LAST meeting of Avalon Borough Council, Mayor Armacoat, who was unable to be present, asked council president Judyaki to read an official proclamation for him setting the month of May as Older American Month. It’s about time! If any of our local youth head their bikes into the middle of our oncoming car during'this month in an effort scare us. we'll report them to the police. We’ve had it!

NOTICE TO Mariners: Hereford Inlet is closed for navigation. If any bouys remain (which we doubt) they are unreliable. The state refuses to bear the $500,000 cost to dredge it without local participation, so this condition will probably remain for the remainder of the summer. If you don’t want to use Townsends Inlet, which has a navigable channel, go south, young sailors, for south.

NOTICE TO swimmers: get your beach tags early (before May 31) and save money. Starting May 16, you may procure your tags from 9 to 4 at S.H. Borough Hall, seven days a week. You may reserve beach tags which will be held for you but they cannot be mailed, so pick them up by June 15. A POSSIBLE softball league has been suggested for the police and Dept, of Public Works authorities in Stone Harbor. It will be sponsored by the municipality if it. goes through. A shuffleboard table was donated to the Boro of Avalon by a local merchant. It was placed in Borough Hall and is a great source of enjoyment to those of us who get to use it. We understand it’s open to the public on Thursdays at noon during the winter months. ^ # WE RETIRED here two years ago and, having led very active lives previously, were a little leary about “long dull winter months" which we were assured, would drive us up the walls, the first year wasn’t a fair trial because we traveled a lot. This year we made the briefest visits possible to family and friends, never getting more than 300 miles from home. We were surprised therefore, to learn of a couple who spent one year here and threw in the towel because they couldn’t stand the loneliness. All we can say is “they never gave this island a fair chance." Granted we have the world’s nicest neighbors . who got us involved immediately but other people we met were also cordial and it’s difficult to keep up with social contracts, let alone assume the church and civic responsibilities we know we should. Despite many opportunities, we have been to exciting Atlantic City only once — to visit an ailing friend, gone to Cape May about ten times to demonstrate its quaintness to visitors and made several trips to Wildwood searching for items one could only find in a city. Thank all of you residents of this island for making this our home and resentful of the long hours we can’t be here to enjoy it.
