So, we are nearing Maytme. May Day brings back memories of flower-decked May poles danced around by Joyful children. In olden times everybody used to get up at dawn and go a-Maying to the woods. They would come back in a parade, cairying flowers and branches of trees. The maypole, covered with ribbons and wreaths, would be carried in the center, and set up in the village square. The whole day and most of the night would be spent in sport and jollity, with dancing around the maypole and good things to eat and drink. BY THE WAY. IN CASE YOU’VE ever wondered, MAYDAY, the call for help used by ships and planes in trouble has nothing to do with May Day. It’s just an English spelling of the way the French word m'aidez sounds. M'aidez means 'help me.’ May was named after Maia, a Roman goddess of Spring. In many places the countryside is at its best at this time. The flowers are still in their early freshness. The birds have come back from their winter stay in the south, and the air is filled with song. If only the world were properly run, this would be the time to shut up school and start vacations. Well, we can dream, can’t we?
