Sounds

By Chtries P. Lamey :

^ BEACH BOYS’ FANS WILL probably be shocked to hear Carl Wilson’s debut album as a solo artist. The lofty, harmony filled sounds of The Beach Boys have been ’ replaced by a strong soul influence. On the surface this might not seem like a good thing, but Carl Wilson pulls it off nicely. He’s got an expressive voice, which blends perfectly with Myrna Smith’s, and he writes solid tunes. Td hate to see The Beach Boys call it quits, but. if they do. Carl Wilson should feel secure about his future. IN 1964, THE SEARCHERS were sharing the top of the charts with The Beatles. The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and The Dave Clark Five. The hits might have stopped, but The Searchers artfttiU making awesome records. "Love’s Melodies" (Sire) is full of melodic tunes that highlight their harmonies and guitar arrangements. The main strength of The Seai'chers is that they don’t sound dated. Someday they’re going to find their way onto the charts again. LAST YEAR THE INIVfATES scored with their remake of The Standells’ "Dirty Water." Their second album, "ShoUn The Dark" (Polydor), is again full of blues inspired rockers that favorably compares them with early Rolling Stones. There’s nothing new.or original about The Inmates, but their.honest, sincere approach to playing is more than enough to win over listeners. "SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS" (Epic) isn’t nearly as interesting on a first listening as Ellen Foley's debut was, but yet it has a charm 6f its own. Instead of standard pop and rock melodies, Ellin Foley and her boyfriend Mick Jones (of The Clash), give us eerie, haunting, middie-of-the-roadish pop. It’s hard to judge a record like this, as it’s a brave move for a second album to differ so much from the one before it, but I would urge trying to hear this before buying it. DEFUNKT (Hannibul/Antilles) is one of the many new soul/R&B bands making a name for themselves on the New York club scene. Excellent musicians and a couple of the tracks are perfect for dancing, but the songwriting is uneven at best and the tempo for most of this is too fast for dancers. Defunkt has a way to go, but given time to develop they could help bring some life back into soul music.
