Few Local Contests In June, November No Challenge For Freeholder

COURT HOUSE - With the filing deadlines last Thursday for the June 2 primary and November general elections, it appears there will be municipal contests in only three of the four townships. Voters in seven local communities will have the responsibility to elect candidates to fill municipal

positions.

In Dennis Township, Democrat Frank L. Mur t phy Sr. is the lone candidate for a seat on the local governing body. Lower Township voters will have the chance this year to fill one seat on the 3-member Committee. For the primary, no Democrats will be on the ballot. On the Republican side Mayor Thomas Clydesdale is running unopposed. Although not a candidate in the primary, independent candidate James Walker of North Cape May will be on the November ballot. In-

cumbent township Clerk Claudia Karamer is binning unopposd for re-

election.

In Middle Township, 2 Democrats and l Republican will be seeking to fill the 1 seat up for grabs on the Township Committee. Democrat Michael Voll, an unsuccessful freeholder candidate last year, is being' challenged by fellow Democrat James E. Alexis. Mr. Alexis is the current chairman of the local zoning board. The lone Republican candidate is Bruce Back. Mr. Back was defeated last year in his bid for a Committee seat. Democratic Committeeman James. Walsh isn’t seeking re-election. In North Wildwood no Democrats are seeking to fill municipal offices. On the Republican side, MAyor Anthony Catanoso is seeking to be re-elected for another 4-year term. Coun-

Mayor Eyes Senate Seat

CAPE MAY - It became official last week, with the filing of his nomination petition, that Mayor Arthur Blomkvest will enter this year’s state Senate race as an “independent Republican” candidate. He will be challenging fellow Republican James Hurley and Democrat Edward Salmon for the seat now held by Republican James S. Cafiero, who is not seeking re-election. Mayor Blomkvest has expressed concern over Cape May County’s alleged inadequate representation among the OOP’s slate of candidates, claiming that a Republican sweep in November would alter the balance of power between

Cumberland and Cape May counties. This year’s GOP Assembly candidates include incumbent Joseph Chinnici and Wildwood Mayor Guy Muziani. Senate candidates Hurley and Assemblyman Chinnici are both from Cumberland County. Mayor Blomkvest has contended that both Assembly seats or, the single, more powerful, Senate seat should be filled by someone from Cape May County.

cil candidates are: 1st Ward, Walter M. Shivers, Sr.; 2nd Ward, Joseph T. Read Jr. ; Council-at-large, Tim O’Leary. Read, a former Democrat switched parties. All the candidates are incumbents. Similar to North Wildwood, no Democrats are seeking to fill the two seats up for grabs on the governing body of Stone Harbor. Incumbent Republicans Eric J. Arenberg and Dorothea A. Pfeiffer are both running for another 3-year term. For one available seat on the Upper Township governing body, incumbent Republican Leonard Migliaccio and Democrat William Shilling will appear pn the ballot. Only incumbent township Clerk Bartura C-imp has filed as a candidate for the clerk’s

position.

The only other municipality to be electing members to its governing body in November is Woodbine. No Democrats arc seeking the 3-year position. On the Republican side, incumbents Theodore DeSantis and William Pikolycky are attempting to be re-

elected.

COURT HOUSE - For the first time in recent years county voters will find no Democratic ' freeholder candidates# listed on the ballot when they go io the polls for the June 2 primary. Deadline to file nominating petitions was last Thursday. The Republican candidates for the two seats up for grabs on the county board will be incumbents Anthony Catanoso of North Wildwood and Gerald Thornton of Villas. The Democratic Party has opted instead to put all of its efforts behind candidates running for the ’ state Senate and Assembly, the county sheriff’s office and local positions in the municipalities of Middle and Dennis Townships. In the race of the state Senate seat being vacated by Republican incumbent James S. Cafiero, Assembly Minority Leader James Hurley and Democrat Edward Salmon both of Millville hope to get their respective parties nomination. If successful in the shoo-in they will square off in November against In- ■ dependent Republican can-

didate Arthur Blomkvest of Cape May. For the two Assembly seats the Republicans seeking the nomination are incumbent Joseph Chinnici of Bridgeton and Wildwood Mayor Guy Miziani. Assemblyman Chinnici is seeking his sixth term, while Mayor Muziani is making his first bid for state office. On the Democratic ticket is Cumberland County Freeholder Henry Ricci and Ocelli City Commissioner William Woods.

Incumbent Republican County Sheriff Beech Fox will be challenged in the primary by fellow Republican Fury Tassoni Mr. Tassoni, a 23 year-old correction officer at the . County. Jail, is out to stop the sheriff from being elected to his fifth term The Democrats will be backing Wildwood Police Lt Ralph Sheets for sheriff. A member of the city policy force for 22 years, he has been cited on several occasions for outstanding service
