OCIAN AND BA1 SOUNDINGS 5By Boyd Tylorj I was going lo slart my column this week with th#statement that the dogwood was white, and the drd|h should bite-followed by the observation that if CpLi David tdReman was here instead of commercial fishing in Alaska he's have had the first drum on hook and line by now Then I stopped into Hodia's tackle shop Wednesday morning, and Joe showed me the 89 lb beauty that Dave Atkinson of Mayville caught on Randy Eckert's boat the _ _ ..a mas vs 1 k- a mm#! nug , , So our 1981 drum season is ofMo a slart, and Ix»u Rodia has his second winner in his comests. There was a-55 lb. drum taken the next night on the Little Chris. Cpt. Tom Roberts, who runs the My Gal was putting the finishing touches on the top of his cabin late Wednesday when I found him, and he’d been out there the night before when the first two weakfish were caught on the Miss Chris III Cpt. Ron Laskey called this in to Joe Rodia, and the wheels started rolling in getting the news out. I imagine this weekend will see a lot of fishermen wetting lines in the
Bay instead of the Ocean.
ACTUALLY THE JETTIES HAVE BEEN producing the most weakfish, and Joey Rodia brought me up to date on this score. He gave me pictures of the first fish that Ed Teise took offof one of the jetties. This was the first weakfish taken, and won the other half of Lou Rodia’s con-

HAVE A BEAUTIFUL MOTHER'S DAY
U LIQUOR STORE
A lot of local fellows went fishing up around Bug light, but there weren’t many drum taken. I talked to Cpt. Jack Osborne of the Red Beard and he told me theyDMrd a lot of drum, but they just wouldn’t bite. Jack di^catch a weakfish. but he didn’t say what size it was. The weather hasn't been very cooperative either, with windy days and thunder squalls at night. The gnats have been biting, though, so if the weather gets nice by the time this column comes out it will be time to get out there and trv to catch a drum or big weakfish. RANDY LAUDEMAN WAS SHOWING ME some beautiful weakfish he’d taken in his nets, and a couple of the fast shad, along with a big doormat flounder, which caused a lot of comtnent on the dock. One fellow remarked that because of this^howing of fluke in the Bay this early, it meant we should have a very good year on flounder. I hope he’s right. Flounder were pretty good last year, but we could stand mdFe of those flatties. There’s going to be some new party boats around this year. Ed Relltv will have Cpt. Jim Solly running the Fiesta on weekends, and making some daytime excursions for weakfish, and some night trips for drum until July l, and then he’ll be christening his new boat with Captain Jim at the helm. Cpt. Charlie Selby dropped me a line saying that he has purchased a new 70 ft. Rainbow, and outfitting it with the best of electronics. He’ll open his season on May 7 trying for weakfish in the Bay during the day. On May 8 he’ll start running night trips with Cpt. Joe McNamee aboard. THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF DRUM taken in nets up around the Peirces Point, Reeds beach area. Bob Neely was telling me that Isobelle Hawkey had reported that Don Douglass has 14 drum in one set, and 9 more in another catch. I really believe we’ll see some good catches ond drum by this weekend, and then maybe we’ll have three or four days lull before the full moon, but on the moon we should be settled into a good season. It looks now as though those big weakfish will take ahold before the drum, but keep in mind that they don’t stay as long of the drum either. The biggest tiderunner that Joe Rodia has weighted in so far was a 13 lb. 4 oz. beauty, and there have been some really big ones taken in the nets. ONE MORE DRUM WAS WEIGHED IN AT Rodia’s on Friday. Ijou Klott had d 40 lb. Friday night up near the Bug on Harry Johnson's boat, and Bob Hoff and his father T. Hoff had seven weakies to 10 lb. 10 oz. off the jetties. Cpt. Joey Roseman had a party out on the Satan's Lady Saturday, and they caught 13 big blues and a flounder in the Bay. so it’s a mixed bag on the Bay side of the scene. Another New Tournament—the Lower Township Optimist Club is sponsoring a world record weakfish tournament May 28 . 29 & 30 with $15,000 as first prize if a world record weakfish is caught. $500 if first prize if there isn’t a record taken. Entries at Jim Wallaces tackle shop, Miss Chris Yacht Basin, and Rodla's Tackle Shop. *
