Salmon Opposes Point Park Closing
MILLVILLE - "The idea of dosing Cape May Point State Park is a good example of a bad move,’’ according to Edward H. Salmon, senatorial candidate for CumberlandCape May counties. "I know the governor has to cut the budget, and I know that the funds for toxic waste disposal have to be found by the Dept, of Enviromerital Protection (DEP), but the closing of 11 state parks will not solve that problem,'’ he said. "ESPECIALLY Cape May Point Park," Salmon continued "because this smallest of state parks is a very cost-effective operation, a nickel and dime operation in the, state
budget that returns great . dividends to the citizens of South Jersey, one that reaches a large segment of people for very little revenue spent. It would be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, ahd Cape May loses again.”. Salmon said. He noted tfcat Cape May

for the flower plants, topsoil replenishment and treatments, bulbs for Fall planting, and a small inscription of the nametf the sponsor for the year. Up to 40 sponsors are needed. Persons willing to sponsor a flower box are encouraged to phone the office of the city manager to receive full particulars by .return mail. VOLUNTEERS WILLING to help the city gardeners watch over the flower boxes are invited to sign up with City Hall. Among the “green thumb” activities which volunteers can help with are occasional weeding of Mall flower boxes, removal of litter from the boxes, picking off wilted flowers or dead leaves from the plants, and other care of the flowers on Cape May’s Mall. Present plans call for planting of summer flowers and plants in the flower boxes May 18 through May 22.
out, "and most of them get here for a visit and come often. Income from these visitors is an increasing economic factor of some importance to the Cape May area,” he added. "I'm thinking of our school children too," Salmon, a Cumberland Couhty educator, went on, "because the Park is an unsurpassed outdoor classroom for our science and enviromental study classes that are an increasingly important part of the school curriculum from elementary grades to college level.”. "TO SHUT DOWN these facilities, to remove the small staff, and to cut back on the educational opportunity for the children would be no noticeable gain for the DEP budget," he said. "EnviromentaDy speaking,” Salmon concluded, "we would leave to the damage of neglect one of the most beautiful natural resource areas in New Jersey as close now to the basic elements of nature as God made it. You can’t solve toxic waste disposal, an enviromental problem, by closing down or cutting off an enviromental showcase like Cape May Point State Park.”
