Medals For Rescue

CAPE MAY - At a recent personnel inspection at the Coast Guard Training Center, two outstanding Coast Guardsmen were cited for their performance during a search and rescue case in the Delaware Bay off Town Bank Machinery Technician Second Class Melvin Halbruner Jr. was cited for meritorious achievement while serving as coxswain and engineer on board Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat at CG443«2 On June 9. 1980, adverse weather conditions of eight to ten-foot seas and winds of forty knots prevented a safe towing operation of the disabled and near sinking pleasure craft • Maria," The vessel was in danger of foundering and throwing its four passengers into the water PETTY OFFICER Halbruner skillfully maneuvered the Coast Guard boat through the pounding seas, alongside the disabled boat and successf6lly transferred the four victims to the safety of the motor lifeboat. In spite of weather conditions. lack of communications. darkness, and stormdriven seas that caused the rescue craft to roll in excess of 30 degrees.

Halbruner's outstanding courage and seamanship resulted in the successful rescue SEAMAN RICHARD Minnich, also cited for meritorious achievement, displayed exceptional pro fessional skill while serving as a crewmember on board the same lifeboat Making preparations for a towpf the pleasurb craft, Minnich worked tirelessly until he was forced to release the "Maria" when weather conditions prevented a safe towing operation He then assisted in rigging and deploying a salvage anchor for the distressed craft AFTER THE FOUR vie tims of the craft were safe ly on board ‘the motor lifeboat. Minnich acted as a lookout on the return trip and provided for the comfort of the four rescued crewmembers He was cited for outstanding courage and seamanship while placing his own life in jeopardy Petty Officer Halbruner . is a native of Cape May and has been stationed in Cape May for two years Seaman Minnich, who has recently earned his coxswain pin. is from Coplay. Pa He recently was transferred to Townsend’s Inlet Station
