CAPE MAY - The Carpenter Gothic home of Paul and Karen Andrus at 223 Perry St., ex- ' emplifies the care and pride the — nouveau generation has for the Victorian architecture that has given this resort city a
renaissance.
While Atlantic City seeks outside riches as a panacea for its commercial ills, Cape May has gone back to its roots, tapping a hibernating heritage awakened, primarily, by outsiders who recognized trie majesty of many of the 'trees" within this unique "forest” by the sea The extant structures, now particolored in their newfound dress, not only make for marvelous inns and quaint guesthouses, but also private homes for young families
on the rise.
The Andruses are typical in this respect. Both adults are nonnatives who fell in love with the town’s serenity. Paul is director
of Community Development for the city, and, in season, manager of Hunt’s Beach Theatre. Karen ' Davenport, formerly an Ocean City High Schoolteacher, is starting her Creative Catering Service. Both are combining voca-. lions and avocations; he enjoys . historical research, photography and restoration, while her forte is.artistry with food, fashions
ets. As with-most home restorations here, theirs was a family affair. The Andrus children haven’t reached the age where they can pitch in; 4-year-old James Logue ana Tara Colleen,) 2, being most helpful at bedtime. For Paul and f&ren and the friends who helped them with the restoration, it was a lot of elbow grease — and a setback, when a painter's torch made the Bicentennial year memorable in the form of a house fire which burned thru the roof and dfttroyed much time and effort, if not that much of the newer (circa 1856) portion of the house. The older, near section of the clapboard on pegged framing housfe contains the Andruses favorite rodm, the low-ceilinged,
bay-windowedjining area with its mixture of Early American and Victorian charm, warmed even further by the fireplace. Primitive moldings, extra-wide floor boards and (electrified) oil lamp coexist with the later period gas, lamp and Victorian appointments. The main portion of the house has high ceilings and a central hall with stairwell separating the parlor and den or study. Original chandeliers grace both main rooms, and custom-made lace curtins protect antique furnishings from the sunlight spilling in thru large windows. The hosue — its dignified exterior in ochre, cream and greyblue — faces a somewhat busy but, for the most part, tree-lined street where neighboring homes are also of another century. The Andrus bomb is a block from the downtown mall and two from the best bathing beaches.
