TMs last week started out with a bang on Sunday with 16 drum caught “Dongle” Bright had 5 on Ms boat, and Jim MagU of the Villas had 5 on his, and I could tie down three more single* - but BmM’a tackle store in the Villas said he weighed in 16 drum, and that’s good enough for me. Budd’s is on Fulling Mill Rd., and they’re brand new this year — they've got a nice tackle supply, and freeh bait. So if you’re from over that way, drop in and chat. They’re both fishermen, and they talk fishing. I can tab a little more about fishing this week, because I’ve gotten out
sports.

there a few tiroes, and I can truthfully say that the bang busU for w Cpt. Mike Vertges on the Sea Witch found 6 Mg weakfish and 12 big Muefish for his party SE of Brandywine Shoal on Wednesday, and Cpt John Heron on the Slammer had a nice catch of big weakfish for his party near Brandywine Light on Thursday.

These boy* are out of Rooeman’s, and I saw these fish so I can tell you about them. The other pery boats have been doing well on blues and weeks, but I haven’t been able to get any up-to-the-minute reports. Cpt. Charlie Selby on the Ratabow is starting up, and he’ll keep me up to
date.
Naw, back to the dmmfish. Jack Osborne on the Red Beard stuck it out about 4 miles northeast of 14 ft. Light, and he finally connected about 9:30 Thursday night when "Little Gish” Spalding hooked and landed a 70 lb. drum. On Wednesday Palmer Way, Dr Ray Brown, and I, and our catch consisted of a 12 pound blue for Dr. Ray — we tried from the Pin-Top to off Norbury’s Landing, and didn’t hear a drum. On Thursday Dr. Flay and I went to Bug Light, and fished alongside of Tom Jorgenson of Wildwood, who caught a big sting ray, but that was the extent of there action there, except for some small sharks. Young Ray Vandegrift was inshore prospecting for drum in some of his dad’s old haunts, but he didn't find any there either. Cpt. Ray'* down in Norfolk trying to get BUI Biller’s new boat finished, and Cpt. David Roaeman is in Oregon, and that hasn’t made our search for drum any easier, because one of those two captains usually found the big fellows. I remember on Wednesday night hearing a fellow on VHF saying he was into blues and weaks just off Cold Spring Inlet, and Thursday John Armour of Stone Harbor told me that Ed Tebe of Avalon had a good catch of blues and weaks just off the Cold Spring entrance so this must have been the fellow calling. Later I found out that Ed had 6 blues that went a total of 65 pounds. Friday night Ben Callaway of Cherry Hill, a fellow sportswriter, and Cpt. Jim Delaney joined Champion Salute Set Mid-June AVALON — The Borough Chamber of Commerce is planning one of this community’s most exciting weekends of the summer June 12-14 when "Avalon Salutes the Philly Sports Champions.” There will be members of the Philadelphia sports teams attending, a night spot tour, parade, Tastykake Home Run Derby, sports clinics, celebrity softball game, and a “Fabulous Fifties and Sixties" Dance with DJ Cary Lawson. The weekend will conclude with a bus trip to the Phillies game on Sun-
day.
Many other organlxalions in Avalon as well as the borough itself are assisting in the project. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Helen Diller Vacation Home for the Blind, sponsored by the Lions
Club.
Joe Brophy and Ernie Yarborough are chairing the event.
Jack Osborne out at 14 ft Light. We beard drum, and Jim had a puppy (about 15 pounds) up to the top of the water, but he was using a two hook rig, and had a 6 pound blue on the other hook which pulled the opposite wsy, and freed the small drum. I got a 6 lb. weakfish for my first of the season; and Jack and "Little Gish" had a lot or Mg blues right behind us. A lot of boats showed up late, and we picked our way home through a real city of Memorial Day fishermen. 89 boats are entered in the South Jersey Fishing Center drum tournament, along with 200 entries in Jim Wallace’s world record weakfish contest, so some good fikh ought to show up with these activities. Jim Wallace told me that Roger Derbyshire had a real big weakfish in his boat, so look for news of that catch. Between the two contests a lot of anglers were fishing last week**nd, and there should emerge a pattern on what these gamesters are doing. Cpt. Jim Delaney and I have a sneaking suspicion that the drum season is going to develop late this year, and Bob Neely says that it will either develop late or it will be a year when we hear them, and don't catch them. I can’t dispute Bob’s experience, but I hope Cpt. Jim and I are right Last Minute Flash — Cpt. Jim Solly on The Fiesta had a big catch of weaks at the Pin Top Friday night. My old friend Len Guthrie had a big display of sharks over at Manner’s Landing on the Wildwood Boardwalk. Be sure and use it! Weakfishing started picking up real good on Saturday.
