Country Farmhouse

W. CAPE MAY — True countiV living at the Jersey Shore is a luxury of geography available to a relative few. While plenty of farmland setting still exist on the Cape, most are on the mainland, miles from the nearest bathing beach. Only at the tip of the peninsula does sand and good . growing soil gently merge without the intervening Back bays that elsewhere separate the resort islands from the mainland. Such is the setting for the home of Charles and Hilary • Russell Pritchard of 601 Stevens St. Less than amile, as the crow oflies, from the South Cape May beach, their home is within easy bicycling of downtown Cape May and the Cape Code-like bathing beaches at Cape May Point. Like many authentic farmhouses in the country, theirs is a wmbination clapboard — the rear of the house built on the site around 1820, the front section moved here from another loca-

tion about 60 years later. Until the Pritchards acquired it a few years ago, the house was vacant and in a state of disrepair. A less energetic couple might have razed the old house and started anew. But the Pritchards are a young couple, used to hard work.

Besides, the:

setting and

ley like the country ' didn’t want to int

ide

upon it with a garish, incompatible structure. ( Which is not to say the Pritchard home isn’t modem. Twin solar panels on the main, front . roof supply domestic hot water needs. A skylight in the rear, kitchen ceiling adds to the overall airiness of the home (as do the ceiling fans, literally). Ceramic tile floors grace the kitchen and baths. Antthow many old farmhouses can boast a music recording studio and a third floor

crafts studio?

The kitchen and the livingroom, with its large coal stove and unusual collection of sunglasses, are the favorite
