EVEN IF THE film Nighthawks isn’t very successful, the soundtrack should do well as it’s by Keith Emerson. Unlike latter day Emerson. Lake, and Palmer records. Nighthawks is full and majestic without being overblown and pretentious. Emerson is a gifted arranger who seems at ease with an orchestra, maybe even more than with a small group. This record should riot only please Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fans, but anyone who appreciates exciting film music. „ BEAM TCHAIKOVSKI’S first album did fairly well on the charts, even producing a single that found regional success. Unfortunately, its follow-up was a dud Bram Tchaikovsky's third, “Funland” (Arista) is a solid, rocking record. He's got a good sense 6t melody, making the material on this record consistently strong. Tchaikovsky's voice is relaxed, yet always powerful. Several of these tracks would make fine singles, and, hopefully, record buyers will once again want to hewi Bram Tchaikovsky. ^1 BARRY MELTON used to be the lead guitarist for Country Joe and The Fish. After a lengthy string of "underground” hits, The Fish broke up and Melton has embarked on a solo career. His most recent album, "Level With Me" (Music Is Medicine' is a mixture of rock. folk, blues, soul, and country styles of guitar playing. Although, Melton is a credible vocalist, it will always be his guitar playing'that will attract attention. This is a hot record. COLD CHISEL is a new band from Australia that stands a good chance of finding an American audience. Their debut album, "East” (Elektra) is full of wellwritten, tightly performed roqk and roll tunes. Solid vocals should help get this some airplay. Not bad at all. U2’s DEBUT "Boy" (Island) has been picking up considerable airplay on local FM rock stations, and their first American tour has been met with sold out crowds and favorable reviews. U2 have a thick, complex sound, not unlike their late sixties' influences. While the long tracks meander a bit, the short ones prove this Irish group has a bright future ahead of them.
