‘Sports Salute’ Weekend

AVALON - Team members of the Philadelphia Flyers, TS’ers, Eagles and Fever will participate in the Avalon Chamber of Commerce "Avalon Salutes the Philly Sports Champions” Weekend, June 12,13, and 14. A bus trip to the Phillies game with the Atlanta Braves will conclude the weekend, with buses leaving the Avalon Parking Lot, 28th 4 Avalon Ave. at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, June 14. This game has been designated Cap Day, each fan attenoing to receive an official Pmilies Jeff cap designed by Richie Ashbume. FOUR PLAYERS and the interim coach, Skip Roderick, of the Philadelphia Feaver Indoor Soccer Team will attend. The players are forward Dave MacWilliams, defender Doc Lawson, goalies Woodie Hartman and Keith Van Eron. The names of the players of the other sport teams who will attend have not yet been released, but the popular Phillies Phanatic is expected to participate in the parade at 10 a.m.

Saturday. The parade will be led by Mayor Ellsworth Armacost and members of the council and will include the U.S. Coast Guard Band from Cape May, the sports celebrities, Avalon fire and rescue equipment, local soccer players and Avalon Girl Scouts. Merchants along the Dune Drive Route of the parade will feature sidewalk sales. THE PHILLIES Tastykake Home Run Derby begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 13 at the 8th St. Recreation area for the youngsters. The adulU will get their chamfe at 5 p.m. at the loth St. playground, where a Celebrity Softball game will pit the members of the championship teams against Chamber members and anyone from the public who would like to Join in. The only requirement for those who want to play on the Chamber team is that they must be wearing one of the special souvenir T-shirts designed for this weekend. A "Fabulous 50’s and 60’s" Celebrity Dance will be held 8:30 to 12:30 Saturday, June 13th, at the Avalon Community Hall. It will be hosted by D.J. Cary

CAPE MAY - The Cape International Wrestling Club took eight members to the AAU-Mid Atlantic Greco Roman and I'Veestyle Championship, in Newark, Del. In the Greco Roman Championships, four club members placed in the top four. Sean Kelleher, at 60 lbs., finished first, while older brother Tim, at 88 lbs., and Brett Randle at 95 lbs., both brought home second place .awards. Finishing the first night of competition with fourth place was Chad Randle at 130 lbs. DURING THE Freestylfe championship on the second day, seven club members finished in the top four places. Chad Randle, at 132 lbs., again finish- 1 ed with 4th place, while Tim Kelleher at 88 lbs,, Brett Randle at 95 lbs.. Marc Kelleher at 100 lbs., and Kevin Lare at 119 lbs. captured second place victories. Finishing in first place were Coach Larry Detris at 198 lbs., and Sean Kelleher at 60 lbs.
