All of a sudden this fishing season has come to life! I want to first review the events and results of the two big fishing contests I mentioned last week, and then go on to this weeks results. In the South Jersey Pishing Center Drum Tournament, weightmaster Steve Seggem told me he weighted in six drum out of the 89 boats fishing. There were more caught, but the 75 lb. leader was caught early, and the word leaked out on the radio so a lot of anglers with smaller fish didn’t weight theirs in. Top fish was the 75 pounder IN JIM WALLACE'S $15,000 World Record Weakfish Tournament. 350 anglers entered, and 64 weakfish were registered that went over 9 lbs. First
prise winner was Ray Devito of Trenton, with a 14 lb. 11 oz. tidenmner on Roger Derbyshire's boat. Second place was taken by Jay Beecroft with a 1? lb. 11 oz. beauty, and thirdplace went to Doug MacEachern with a 11 lb. 12 oz. weakie. Now, that's a lot of weakfish, and when I boil it all down it wasn’t such a bad weekend after all. The biggest weakfish I’ve heard of so far this season was a 15 lb. 13 oz taken by Capt. Mark Elliott on the Gone Flshln out of Bidwells Creek. Capt. Mark also caught a 75 lb. drum the same night, which was Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. I know about this because Tom Rice. Bill llalbruner, and I were there fishing near Capt Mark alongside of Jack Osborne's Red Beard.

switch to mostly flood tide to high water in the evening. Some of us think this is going to be a late season and if it is, drum catches should go from poor to great in the next two weeks. Only time will tell, but for right now there’s big weakfish in the upper Bay, and at the mouth of the Bay; and there’s a lot of big blues filling in on top of thebig weakfish, so fishing isn’t that bad. 1 A TIP OF THE Old Angler's hat to Capt. Dick >Weber at South Jers# Fishing Center. He had so many anglers waiting for party boats on Memorial Day that he sent an S.O.S. to Capt. Jim CiccblUi in Wildwood Crest who sent two boats to Wildwood to take care of the overflow crowd. The Jersey cape’s producing a lot of fish right now, but there’s a lot of anglers fishing, so we tend to think the catch isn’t so great, because .it is sometimes spotty, but actually the catches are very good, and with the warm weather we’ve had it’s going to get better. ONE CORRECTION from last week Capt. Ray Vandegrift is bringing Bill Diller's boat from Norfold. And one more: Be sure and see not use Len Guthrie's shark exhibit at Mariner's Landing on the Wildwood Boardwalk (my typewriter backlashed). TRAGEDY ALWAYS comes in threes. First Dr. Bob Slineman, then Harry Eidredge, and now the passing of niy old friend Bill Shaw, of Dias Creek. Bill worked in our mill at
Just as we were leaving, Don Murphy, who was fishing with Jack hooked a big drum which later proved to be 78 lbs. 4 oz. FROM MEMORIAL Day on there have been successive big catches of weakfish and bluefish. Capt. CharUe Selby gave me his weekly report, and out of six days he only had one day that the pool fish went under 8 Iba. oh the Rainbow. A lot of..catches of big weakfish and big bluefish have bAp made at the mouth of the’Bay bet? ween McCries flhoal and Somers shoal. On Memorial Day, Capt. Mike Vertges bn the Sea Witch at Rosemans had at least 50 big fish spread out before the cleaning table of which 50 per cent were Glues, and the other half weakfish — all of them 8 lbs. or better. CAPT. WALT Haas on the Hawser had 50 big weaks for his. party on Wednesday of last week, and the Big Jim II has a big catch with the mate catching 16 tiderunners all by himself. CAPT. TOM ROBERTS, on the My Gal found a spot in the Bay, and had 35 big weakfish for his party. THERE’S BEEN A LOT of theories on the lack of drum catches this season, and the latest came from Joe Rodia. Jofl^aims that the Bay is fulBof calico crabs, and the drum have all the feed they need on these spotted crabs, also known as sand crabs. Several schools of drum have been spotted on top of the water in the upper Bay, but no one seems to know what they’re doing. A lot of us feel that this week will
