AVALON — Bishop James L. Schad, pastor of Maris Stella Catholic Church, announced recently plans to construct a new 1,200-seat church. The new church is to be situated on a site between the existing rectory and auditorium, the area currently in use as a parking lot. The proposed church will be of masonry construction and designed to be as maintenance free as possi ble. The use of natural light and numerous entrances is an integral part of the architectural design, providing an energy cost efficient structure that blends in with the beauty of the surrounding area. The exterior of the church will

feature a beautiful tower rising from the church and housing the chimes. THE PRESENT Maris Stella Chureh was built and donated in 1927 by the Frederic Michell family. Plans call for the continued use of this smaller church whenever feasible The proposal budget for the church is one million dollars. To attempt to offset as much of the cost as possible, Maris Stella Parish has embarked on a New Church Building Fund with alhiinimum goal of $350,000. All parishioners and summer residents of Maris Stella Parish will be contacted over the next several weeks and asked to make tax deductible pledges payable over a

three-year period. The construction of the new church provides many memorial opportunities, allowing for the remembrance of Hving or deceased loved ones. THE LEADERSHIP committee for the fund raising campaign is composed of William Komig, William Leahy. William Saurman, Dudley Newbold. George Phillips, Joseph Oakes and Robert Helverson Ruotolo Asso., a New York-based firm, has been retained to conduct the fund raising program. It is anticipated that construction of the new church will begin in mid-summer. The architectural firm for the project is Von Uffel and Russo of Haddonfield.
