Bald Eagle Egg Had Thin Shell
Victorian Fair
TRENTON — A wildlife biologist from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the lone egg produced by New Jersey's only* pair of nesting bald eagles may have broken because its shell was significantly thinner, than it should have been. Stanley Wiemeyer, wildlife biologist at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland, said his investigation of the small piece of shell recovered from the nest revealed that the shell thickness was an average 17 percent thinner than normal. THE AVERAGE eagle shell has a thickness of 0.61mm, Mr. Wiemeyer said, but the egg from the New Jersey nest averaged only 0.5mm, which he called maginal for a successful hatching. It is known that the inability of the eagles to hatch young is linked to tne presence of DDT in the birds as a resplt of feeding on fish contaminated with
the now-banned chemical in their tissue. DDT IS KNOWN to cause the birds to become infertile, or to cause the female to lay eggs with such thin shells that they break under the weight of the parents. Paul D. McLain, deputy director of the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, said pieces of egg retrieved from the nest after the birds suddenly departed last month were too small, and support material was not sufficient to determine if the egg was infertile, or the embryo had died. THE EAGLES. WHICH return each year to the nest located in a remote swamp forest in Cumberland County, have not had a suc- : cessful hatching since 1976. McLain said the division next year will engage in an eagle management program designed to help the bald eagles successful rear offspring, and hopefully to restore moce pairs of nesting eagles to the state.
British Seagull 387 Banner Birds
by Ima Byrd The banner planes advertising local wares and establishments fly up and down the beaches. Often an adventurqps seagull goes along for the ride. “It’s great Sport hanging on the end of the banner," said Sky, fluffing his feathers and getting ready for a banner season. “You really should try it sometime 387,” he added as he followed the plane across the open field...“Auwk...auwk....arruwk!...andaway!"he screamed as the plane took off, banner and bird behind. I sat in the tree by the open field watching the silly bird soar through the air balanced on the end of the banner. •IF I WERE A LITTLE YOUNGER I’d try that myself." I said to Worry bird perched nearby. “Not me," said my friend, “too scary!” Another banner plane took off and the pilot waved to the ground crew. They were great people those pilots. In fact, the entire operation pleased me and had my respect. It was imaginative, creative and productive. As the plane headed skyward, its advertisement unscrolled...“Bobbie Kaye-Queen of the keyboards!" I remember her, I though recalling the night I sat outside a local club listening to her fabulous rendition of "The Sting.” That’s music, even to a bird’s ears, I thought.' Humans sure know how to get their idea across, I mused as the planes headed out across the meadows, banners flowing WHY NOT. I CHUCKLED AS I flew to a hidden nest of trees not yet bulldozed by developers. "Art, Art," I called excitedly. Just then a queer looking bird with a beard emerged from the brush. "Ah, 387, what brings you here? Do you want a painting lesson or perhaps a little poetry by the Midnight Gull?” "Not exactly, Art,” I said smiling. “It’s just that I got this great idea," I added whispering my secret. "FANTASTIC!” Art said as his beady little eyes lit up the woods. “We'll get started on it right away. What do you want painted on them?” “I thought perhaps — things like "Be Kind To Birds"..."Stay Off Our Nests”....“Birds Die From Spray" .."We Want an Oil Shortage"...you know" Art nodded his head wisely. "Of course this will cost you a few clams," he said. “And the birds will want to go to Florida in the winter like the other pilots!” “Hang the expense," I cried. “I’ll get hold of Sky and the other bird wingers to see if they agree. We'll have our own fleet of Banner Birds!" I started to get excited. "Just think of it." I cried, “they'll fly over the beaches, down the boardwalk, across golf courses everywhere. We'll get our message across," I added joyfully. “We'll get our message across!" NEXT WEEK: Summertime
Some 20 years ago there were at least 10 pairs of nesting bald eagles in New Jersey and now there is but one pair. McLain, noting that the
bald eagle is both a state and federal endangered species, said the division will do everything in its power to aid the eagles He said the eagle program v
have top priority.
