Hurley For Toxic Waste Bond Issue
Assembly Minority Leader James Hurley’has called for overwhelming ,public support in November for the $100 million bond issue for cleaning up toxic waste dumps. Hurley is urging the public to show up to support the measure at a public hearing in Freehold this Friday The Capital Budget and Planning Commission already has given its seal of approval to the bill. One of the few problems this modem society has spawned that can be solved by throwing money at it is the unsafe dumping andd stockpiling of toxic chemical wastes.'* Hurley said. “It may also be one of the most serious threats to human health and life as we know it since the inven-
tion of the nuclear bomb,'' According to the Millville Republican, New Jersey is peppered with pockets of chemical corruption, festering sores on the land scape that will, in time, infect our water supplies and begin killing us. “We have laws now that prohibit the careless dump ing and stockpiling ol chemicals But there wen no such laws when most of the existing dumps wen treated, nor was the lethal danger of many of thesr chemicals realized at tht time “It is impossible, .therefore, to fix respon *sibility on a manufacturer or dumper in most cases It is a public problem that must be attacked with public funds.'' thf assemblyman opined.
