apologize and the thing that pleased her most was that four people from the National Museum of Art came all the way up from Washington to share her evening and the fact that so many of her quest’s signed up for the classes, which will start in July at the Coast Guard Station on the corner of 117th St and Second Ave. Wc asked others to tell us about it and got the following details: M«ry Anna Tegge of Stone Harbor and Glassboro managed the party perfectly and was responsible for all the goodies served. We were told there was more Brie than anyone could eat (Care to make a bet on that’’) Surrounded by the prints of Robert Bateman both hostesses welcomed their guests wearing glamorous long gowns (Jo Col i no.'s came from Egypt.) The gallery was decorated by masses of red and white geraniums and the music supplied by the Peathance Players of C.mTc.H. was composed by King Henry the Eighth for the enjoyment of his court. One wonders how he had time with all those wives, but he was so remarkable in so many ways. Chill Thompson gave a short talk on medieval music and the whole evening was steeped in an atmosphere of fun and culture. According to our sources, Susan Short of 98th St. was the life of the party. THURSDAY NIGHT Avalon Borough Council revised its ordinances controllng canvassers, hawkers and peddlers. Worried by the increase of migratory vendors, Council defined canvassers as merchants who travel around the town in any sort of conveyance to attract buyers for their goods. Hawkers do the same thing but call out or yell to attract customers. Hoping to control the pervasion of peddlers, Council has now set the licensing fee for any transient merchant at $150 annually for one vehicle and $150 for each additional vehicle. A special one-day $25 license will be issued so that we can still buy balloons for our kids at parades «fn fairs. No vending will be permitted within 500 feet of an established business. HAVE YOU VISITED the Robert Bateman exhibit of prints at the Wetlands yet? If not, please do. The collection made us really understand kleptomannia for the first time. We wanted each and every print so badly we

could taste them but beside each print there is a legend which bears the words “sold out." Bateman, who started painting at age 12, obviouslyfadores animals in their natural surroundings. He has been strongly influenced in style by Andrew Wyeth but to us he is Wyeth’s superior in capturing poignance. HE,IS AMOUNG the few great painters who have achieved international acclaim during their lifetime. The prints are meticulous, signed reproductions of his paintings done mostly in oil. but a few acrylics, and the originals would fetpt)., upwards of $10,000. \ Last year he painted* the osprey and black ^simmer in Cape May Count^nd he nlans to return* this ^autumn. The exhibit is open 9-5 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday until June 15 — don’t miss it and do help support our wonderful Wetland’s Institute. Anyone who thinks Stone Harbor lacks culture, lacks coAh — we’ve got it all here. WE WALKED over to Smuggler's Cove yesterday and were surprised to find it closed. When we talked to the owner of the fish market, Loo Bachmann. a month ago, he told us he would open Memorial Day Weekend. We expressed our surprise to one of Lou's neighbors and he told us that Ldu was working outside getting ready for the opening when he suddenly felt excruciating pain in his back. He was taken to Burdette Tomlin Memorial and was there for^ree or four days until the pain subsided. Nothing was broken, but severely strained muscles can almost hurt more. He feels better now and his store will be opened this weekend for sure. THE OVER-FIFTY NIFTIES. as they now call themselves, who usually expend their efforts at nursing homes changed their circuit last Saturday and went up to Somers Point to the Crab Trap & restaurant where they gave a performance for the New Jersey members of the alumnae of Hallahan High School. Grace Sheeran of 217 100th St. is a Nifty and also belongs to the alumnae group so we see her hand in this. It was also a birthday .celebration for Alix

WE FINALLY got a spot of dry*wcather on Tuesday and dashettfover to vote but we needn't have worried since the skies simply remained overcast from then on. Jane and Jim Owings are presently serving as committeewomen and committeeman for the First District in Stone Harbor. They were up for reelection on the Republican ticket and we asked them about the turnout. Wc were delighted that so many people had shown up dispite the downpour. It really is important th show Trenton that we care who gets elected. No Summer Social VILLAS - Social Nights sponsored by the Villas Civic Club have been suspended until fall.
