AS A TEEN IDOL in the ’50s and early ’OOs. Rick Nrlaon racked up a healthy string of hits. Things slowed down, but never ended, as Rick Nelsdn continues to perform with the best of today’s artists His new album. "Playing To Win" (Capitol) finds him in fine voice, with a strong band, and excellent material. The material ranges from pop to rockabiliyfvith a healthy dose of rock and roll throughout. Ri« Nelson refuses to get old, and we’re luckier because of it. Rock on Rifk. * , THE A’s FROM PHILADELPHIA had a strong debut album last year and a live show that’s consistently exciting. but their second long-player. "A woman's Got The Power" (Arista) is rather weak ■* Solid vocals and musicianship, but the songwriting is more often than not tepid. The A’s have talent, but they have to sharpen their skills a bit more. PRINCE HAS BEEN GETTING a lot of publicity due to the sexual content in his lyrics, but few are mentioning he's probably the best thing to happen to soul music in the past five years. A smooth vocalist, who has support from a tight, rockin’ band. His new album. "Dirty Mind." (Warner Brothers) is a treat from start to finish. Prince could be the most influential black musician since Jimi Hendrix or Otis Redding. 1 JAMES WHITE AND THE CONTORTIONS’ "Second Chance" (PVC) takes the best cuts from his two out of print albums oi\ Ze records. James White has been influenced by people such as Albert Ayler and James Brown, which makes for an interesting approach to his music. Combining avant-garde jazz with modem funk and playing basically New York new wave clubs, Chance has evolved into a true original. Much of his music is self-centered and pretentious, but overall, James White is a man who can take the sounds that inspired him and turn them into something original. MAGAZINE’S FOURTH ALBUM is a live one, ft doesn't have the trappings most records df this^type have. The sound on "Play (IRS/A4M) is stillful] and polished Howard Devoto’s singing is dense, W emotional and, on the whole. Magazine is improvhjg all the
time.
