* i.iisl week the long awaited run of drumfish appears to have started First off. Dougir Bright on the Nodo'C had four drum on Saturday, and four on Suntfty According to Jhe Hodia ••Dougie's” only score was on quantity.
because his biggest drum went to 72 lbs . which placed third in Joe's con-test-second place is held by Howard Severance with a 79 lb. humpback, and Tommy Jorgensen of Wildwood Crest is leading with an 81 lb. monster Joe also reported that Joe MacCiregor had a f»2 lb drum for his first of the year, and on Tuesday Jack Osborne broke the ice with a 59 lb drum Which he caught on the Red Board ANOTIIKK I NTSl'AI. story came out of Kodia's tackle on Wednesday - Hr. Joe Raab of Cape May Court House was fishing with Irving Johnson of Point Pleasant and Ocean City, and Irv caught a 51'v lb drum, which they weighted in A short time ‘ later Dr. Joe caught one about the same si/e. and they released it because they figured they had enough drum ^ith the one they caught

I can't help but applaud what they did-if everyone looked at fishing this way we wouldn't have scarcity of species showing up. A tip of the Old Anglers hat to Dr. Joseph Raab THERE’S STILL a lot of weakfish being taken. John Pappas, who runs John's Restaurant across from South Jersey Fishing Center, took some time off from his busy schedule, and got 23 tiderunners the first of the week. During the Elks conven tion. I was over at Vince Rinaldi's Flagship Inn. and one of his guests. Carl Zimmermacher from Lacey Elks Lodge in Forked River, was cleaning a 9'2 lb weakfish be caught on Kddie Royal’s Royal Flush. Carl caught eight of those tiderunners on a spinning rod. and he said there was a big catch on ('apt. Ed’s partv boat. joe RODIA also told me of a 16 lb 11 oz. flounder that Ralph J. Fairley of (ilassboro weighted in from the night run of the Royal Flush. Ralph caught this big doormat on a hucktail with squid and a purple worm, and he waited from 4 till 7 a.m. to weight it in. LIKE CORONER of Stone Harbor called and told me that one of his guests. Robin Nichols of Sussex. England, had five big weakfish on (’apt. Walt Schick’s Nada Jane. The biggest one Robin had was a 12 lb. 2 oz. weakfish. so | he'll have some stories for his angling friends back in | England WEAK FISHING WAS terrific on the weekend, and there were so many big

Charlie Selby, on the Rainbow had u not her banner week, and sent me a picture of a 12 lb. 1 oz. weakte taken by Ed llackford. of Philadelphia Ed got his f>rize at the Rips with Captain Charlie on a white and yellow'- bucktail dressed with a purple

Now back “o the Drum—as you can see. there have been quite a few showing up. Randy Monihan had three on Wednesday night east of 14 Ft. Light, which he weighed in at Rodia's. Joe Halbrunrr and I got out there Thursday night, but the weather got looking bad. so we headed for the barn before we got caught
in a thundersquall.
ON THE WAY IN we oassed Tom Jorgensen on" his Bee Gee and he was sticking it out. On Friday. .Iphn Manganaro. of Green Creek and I got a chance to get out there, and it was a beautiful night. There was a big fleet fishing east of 14 Foot Light, but as we were passing Tom. he waved us down and said he’d gotten three drum where he was sitting the night before, so we anchored on a line from him. and just as it started getting dark. John got a good bite which turned out
to be a 634 lb. drum.
Now I’ve been all over the old spots in the Bay and haven’t heard a dfutn yet; but this spot Tom Nfcd was a good one. and it produced. 9 This just goes to pAfcre that you can have all the good locations you want, but in the long run. a friend who has caught a drum the
night before turns out to be
the best bet.
WE SAW ANOTHER small drum cau|ht on this same line by a friend of Tom’s, who he had also given the word to about this fishing spot. I heard a lot of talk that night about drum being caught on the CB, but I’m not convinced that the reports were all factual. I’ve gotten back to my old habit of having to see a fish caught or weighed in
before I rdport it.
This week could prove good for drum, and if the weakfish hang around it* ought to be a banner fish catching week on the Jersey Cape. I wish I could write more about catches, because I know that Capt. Frank Cassedy on the Lady Grace has been out with some parties, and he always produces; and I know that Capt. Walt Haas on the Hawser had a big catch of blues and weakfish. but the truth is that I’ve been so busy
fishing I just couldn’t catch up on the great weakfish and bluefish catches. One last thing — if you really want to see a truly beautiful boat—Bill Diller's Canyon Lady Is now docked at South Jersey Fishing Center, and she is really outstanding! LASf MINUTE News Flash—Budd’s Tackle. Villas, called to say that Horace backet of 416 E. Miami Ave., Villas, weighted in a 72 lb. drum taken at Brandywine Light. And I finally broke the ice with a puppy drum Saturday night en Jack Osborne’s Red Beard. Don Murphy gaffed it while “Little Fish” Spalding instrucTfd.
