endless streams of great talent like singer Marion Morgan. Her n test discovery was a comeae who was to capture the hearts of Apierica — the late, beloved Totie Fields. Totie tells the story of her discovery id her book, released not long before her demise. Lou Booth’s is now the Club 18, starring the contemporary comedy sensation Charlie Prose. Critics won’t be surprised if Prose reaches the same level of national celebration as the late Totie Fields. After hours, Totie used to relax in the spot now occupied by Walter Cardin’s Irishman’s Cafe. ANOTHER NORTH WILDWOOD spot that received international recognition was the Manor Supper Club, as operated by the Tempest family and later, the late Oscar Garrighues. The Tempests presented splendid talentfrom a rock 'n roll band of AmericSn Indians to stuttering Joe Frisco, the famed comic Oscar Garrighues took the rubber band off the bankroll and offered the top flight stars as well as the original Minsky’s Follies. Perhaps the most gracious, star ever offered at the Manor was Liberace. He patronized most of the Pacific Avenue shops and accepted any and all household dinner invitations from everyday

folks.

Stars to appear at the Manor included Tony Martin, the Lennon sisters, Johnnie Ray, Herb Shriner, Joni James, Patti Page, Vince (Dr. Ben Casey) Edwards, Marion Marlowe, Georgia Gibbs and scores of others. CENTER ISLAND, Ben Martin, now 83 years young, offered stars of the caliber of Sammy Davis Jr. at his Bolero. Lavish revues at the posh Bolero headlined stars like Tommy Sands, the Tommy Dorsey band, Buddy Hackett, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Connie Boswell, the Andrew sisters, Guy Mitchell, Mindy' Carson, Edyie Gorme, StevS Lawrencfe, Tony Bennett anAJohnny Mathis. The Surf Xlub was originally named th? Orange Grove. Weekends, an unknown New York song plugger named George Gershwin tickled the ivories. The Orange Grove was also a mecca for vaudevillians who adopted the Wildwoods as their summer home. Appearances were made 'there by Olson and Johnson, of "Hellazapoppin’ " fame and Crest Resident Lew Lehr who was famous for his expression, “Monkeys Iz The Craziest

People” It Fox Movietone News. Phil Bon-Hi and Eddie Rossi, the roller skating barkeeps, parlayed personality and knownow into a name policy at the Surf Club, the successor to the Orange Grove. THEIR MOST SUCCESSFUL booking was the Fifth Dimensions, at the heighth of their million-record seller peak. They also offered Bobby Vinton, Enzo Stuarti, Pat O'Brien, Bobby Rydell, Lionel Hampton and Rick Nelson. Oddly enough, Rick’s parents, Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard, were wed in Wildwood during an engagement at Hunt’s Plaza Ballroom. Phil and Eddie also offered a long engagement of Herbie Fields before the famed bandleader committed suicide. The Stardust club also took a brief fling at names with Don Rickies, Connie Francis, Flip Wilson, the New Christy Minstrels and others. Club Esguire presented Izzy Bushkoff’s Creole Follies tor a few , seasons. The revue highlighted a pair of comedians known as Redd Foxx and Slappy White. Harricane East featured many seasonp of lavish Joe Cavalier revues that produced top singing stars like Denise Clemente and Rick Jason. Jake Diamond’s Martinique featured long runs of one of the best lounge acts, Steve Gibson’s Red Caps, who introduced a singer in Wildwood named Damita Jo. The Martinique also offered talent like Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn and A1 Martino. GEORGE JAMES OPENED THE 3100-seat Diamond Beach with Frankie ”01’ Iron Lungs” Laine. Other stars he headlined included Martha Raye, the McGuire Sisters, Carmel Quinn, Jonathan Winters, Henny Youngman, Ted Lewis, Dick Haymes, Johnny Mathis, Eartha Kitt, Gypsy Rose Lee and a season-long appearance of Charlie Spivak as house band. Henry Gervasi also brought many stars to Enrico’s Flamenco Room, such as Kay Starr, Patti Page, Teresa Brewer, James Darren, Fats Domino and others. This portion of the Jersey Shore gets its name from the stands of native trees that once graced the Five-Mile Beach area but historically, entertainers — and millions of fans — have been "wild” about the Wildwoods. The tradition continues.
