by J.A. Cunningham Tourists driving south on the Garden State Parkway often ask about the tombstone alongside the road near milepost 6.2. When the parkway was built it crossed the Whitesboro burial ground, and all but two of the graves were moved to other cemeteries. Those remaining were of Noah Cherry and "General" Askew (whose stone has since disappeared). They were friends of George White of North Carolina, who was one of the first black U.S. Congressmen and the founder of Whitesboro. Both Cherry and Askew were Civil War veterans, and Cherry was part of General Sherman's march to the sea. J.A.
