For million^ of years these "living ofssils” have come ashore during the new moon in May and June to lay. their eggs. Although one female may lay up to 20,000 ggs, only a few will survive to adulthood. The eggs are important food for migrating shorebirds on their northbound journey to nesting grounds in the Arctic tundra. The horseshoe crab, sometimes incorrectlyi called king crab has four eyes, six pairs of legs and one hundred “leaves” in its five “gill books” with which it breathes. Turn a | horseshoe crab over and look for these special appendages. Contrary to popular belief, horseshoe crabs^ are not harmful to people. In fact, the blood of this ancient relative of the spider contains fantastically sensitive chemicals used by researchers to detect harmful bacteria called endotoxins which are sometimes found in human blood. In short, the blood of this animal may someday save your life. Many people fear horseshoe crabs ana throw them up on the beach to die. Others use them for eel bait. Some scientists fear that the population is declining impart because of the ways people use or abuse horseshoe crabs.
