Cape May County is one of the least developed areas I’ve seen. The fact that it’s this way is evidence of culture. What's down here is a diffused culture, a large segment down here doesn't want Cape May County to change. If you feel any love at all for nature you’re constantly outraged.” Wandres said that’,? why art is so important and if there is any philosophy involved it is outgrowth of creativity. “That's why it is also important to make it pay, because by the very implication it means that people are WILLING to pay for it. They pay for bombs, cigarettes and booz, why not art?” he asked. Wandres isn't sorry he gave up painting for picture taking. “I just expanded from an inspired watercolorist of nature scenes and especially the littoral, outward, to embrace the same theme in allweather photography. At some future point, watercoldl- painting may once again become asserted in the larger consciousness or, it may not. I haven’t lost a thing, or even finalized it — just carefully and tenderly put it away for a while as I work through the new synthesis,” he said. Wandres reached for his freezer bag and looked out at the dark, grey, wet morning. “I think the wetlands are one of the most fabulous places I’ve ever seen. I’d really like to. live out there,” he said quietly.
