CAN MAY COUNTY MAQAIINt /II
laminated for man-made aquaculture. The fish don’t know how bad it is. There have been too many government permits.” Wandres said in spite of all the problems, Cape May County looks pretty good and is still one of the best places to live. “I’ve traveled extensively from the coast of Portland, Maine to Florida. Cape May County is one of the least developed areas I’ve seen. The fact that it’s this way is evidence of culture. I’ve seen other places where every little scrap of land was developed. “rve done studies on the politick here. All the way back to 1930 the thinking has been consistent — a need for open space. What's down here is a diffused culture, a large segment down here doesn't want Cape May County to change. That’s good because if culture is to survive it jeeds a PLACE.” r Wandres said that there were some exceptions. “Lower Township soon will be nothing but one house after another. They're stupid down there. After awhile there’ll be no reason to go there.” “Do you realize there are only five estuaries in the world and we’re near two of them (Chesapeake and Delaware). Since the Middle Ages most of the estuaries have been filled in with landfill and silt. The Dutch did it deliberately. They filled in and completely destroyed their fishing industry,” Wandres said. “That would be some project for developers here. How do you fill in the Delaware Bay?” Wandres was incensed when he saw local wetlands being filled in near the bay. "Trucks would
unload at night. I wrote about it to everyone but the only reply I got was they eventually stopped dumping. Obviously they got their variance for civic betterment!" Pollution is a universal disease, according to Wandres. “They’re doing it on the Hudson Hiver, filling it in and building right into the river. They’re doing the same thing in Maine — same erosion problems — papermills and chemicals. If you feel any love at all for nature you’re constantly outraged.” Wandres said that’,? why art is so important and if there is any philosophy involved it is outgrowth of creativity. “That's why it is also important to make it pay, because by the very implication it means that people are WILLING to pay for it. They pay for bombs, cigarettes and booz, why not art?” he asked. Wandres isn't sorry he gave up painting for picture taking. “I just expanded from an inspired watercolorist of nature scenes and especially the littoral, outward, to embrace the same theme in allweather photography. At some future point, watercoldl- painting may once again become asserted in the larger consciousness or, it may not. I haven’t lost a thing, or even finalized it — just carefully and tenderly put it away for a while as I work through the new synthesis,” he said. Wandres reached for his freezer bag and looked out at the dark, grey, wet morning. “I think the wetlands are one of the most fabulous places I’ve ever seen. I’d really like to. live out there,” he said quietly.
"If you feel any constantly outraged.
