More Getting Turned On to Terminals
m
Hy BoB Shiles KKMA By the time Lower Cape May Regional High School students return to classes in the fall, two additional minicomputers will be available for student use. At its meeting May 2R, the local school, here unanimously authorized 15.040 for upgrading and expanding the school s mini computer system that is cutfently utilized by the Mathematics Dept for computer science instruction Funds for the project are available in the current 1980-81 budget ACCORDING TO Mathematics Dept chair man Ann Dingwall, the funds will be used to purchase two new terminals, and a multi-user chassis that has the capability of handling up to 12 individual terminals Currently tlje school has two terminals, each of which can be used by only one student at a given time. The new equipment will be purchased and serviced thru Thomas Instrumentation. Avalon • Within the next two or three years we hope to havev 12 terminals," Ms Dingwall told the school board "We eventually would like to use the system in Business and Science courses " BASED UPON THE need and growing student interest in computer science tfourses, the new equipment is needed if students are to receive adequate time to run their programs With 75 students we just can t move them along quickly enough with just two terminals," Ms Dingwall said There are about 18 students in each class According to computer
science instructor Debbie Jackson, the 75 students enrolled in computer courses next year will be divided into four sections. There will be three classes of academic computer sciences and one general dfss This year there are three sections — two academic and one general. WHEN THE Computer course began at the school four years ago as an experimental class, it was taught ony for a half year. It is now a full-year course that has grown both in popularity and in the amount of material offered “We found it to be a popular and successful program." Ms Dingwall told the board. "Student interest is very, very high." In addition, the math chairman noted that with new equipment students will be able to learn more computer languages and practical applications than are currently available with the existing system. Besides basic, the multiuser system is capable of handling fortran, pascal and the highly sophisticated language. Only basic language can be used at present
